I'm thinking of buying a new desktop that can comfortably run games like WoW, CS:S, and CoD4. Oh and Starcraft 2, of course. My friend recommend this deal for Dell XPS 420
Ah, i'm confused- why do we have to click the link, instead of, you know, someone else copying and pasting the info... (assuming OP is a genuine enquiry.)...
Ok, i'll do it!
So what do you guys think of this PC's specs for gaming???
(From the link, obviously...) Dell has this fully loaded XPS 420 desktop with 20-inch widescreen LCD monitor for $949 Free 3 - 5 day shipping after $469 instant savings through this link.
I'll never understand why they feel the need to stick in multicore processors and loads of RAM, then skimp on the graphics card. If you're not buying a gaming computer then you sure as hell don't need either of those (shit, I have 2 gigs in a no-excuses gaming rig and it's plenty).
The proc is nice, what I have now its a well known excellant overclocker.
Video card is trash.
22-inch monitors are all TFT if I remember correctly and pale in comparison to newer 21 and 24inch monitors which have no real ghosting issues and are much more bright and colorful.
for $1000 you could do your self better if you already have a monitor laying around and can wait to get a real one and not this junky thing.

absolutely 100% right. At the moment > 2 gig is pretty much useless for gaming, but a faster graphics card will make a big difference.
And dual core is nice, and also cheap, but also largely unused by games.

Because for stuff like Desktop Publishing, thats a killer machine. But touting it as a gaming machine with a weak-ass card like that is pretty bad.
for 949 or whatever it costs, its not a bad rig. I just picked up one similar (better graphics card, but no monitor) for 699. Including the monitor, which i assume is a dell branded monitor, its decent.

2 gigs in vista is like night and day.
Thats vista though,
I'm not stupid, unlike some Newegg reviewers who say that the ram is broken and only displays 3.5.
Btw, Vista will now display that you have 4 gigs of ram but tell you that "Due to the 32bit nature of the OS, you can only actually use 3.5 gigs." or whatever it is. Just to shut people up.

Wait, what now? What did I miss? I've only casually followed LCDs, waiting to make the plunge.
ew...2400, the rest of the system is pretty good but even the CPU they have in there I assume the q6600 isn't really the best for gaming. An E8400 which is cheaper and only a dual core will give you more performance as the clock speeds and front side bus are a lot faster. Both are very good OC'ers. Also I don't like ATI, there 3850 as there flagship card is retarted. An 8800gt is better and cheaper, then you also don't get the damn catalyst drivers.
But yeah I wouldn't buy, you could build a much better system suited to your needs
XPS 420 is useless. You're paying a premium for the XPS branding, but it's not even a true gaming rig - no SLI. The only difference between the XPS 420 and the business-class Dimension 9200 is the case and a firewire port - mobo and PSU are the same. You'd be better off with an Inspiron desktop if you wanted to go Dell non-SLI.
This signature might explain the choice of CRT. When I'm done with all that shit, I'll move to the LCD. But I'm keeping the tube around for old games just in case.
Now is there some new LCD technology better than TFT? Or are you talking about TN panels? I'm aware of the latter.
If i go for it I'll upgrade a Video card. so any good gaming pc suggestions?

yea, build it yourself, or have a friend build it. you can get a pretty rockin system and an OEM copy of windows for less than 800 bucks. No monitor though. but monitors are usually best left bought seperately. Most monitors in packages suck balls. IMO
I'd love to have a high quality CRT... if I could bloody find it. Seriously, they were hard to find a few years ago, and aren't sold period now. Even while they were still available they were more expensive than LCDs because of limited supply.
I miss the days when lowering the resolution was a viable framerate increase method.

Anyhow, the specs including a monitor are actually really good, but you're going to have to replace that video card soon.
Why don't you send him $90 and find out?
If it is, fuck you, fuck you very much.

CRT for life. Locked resolution for the lose.
