It has only lasted for 8 years or so, and we have already had...

9/11 and the fallout from it, War on Terrorism
The War in Afganistan
The War in Iraq, 1 million dead already
Independence of Kosovo
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, 310,000 dead
Katrina
Myanmar cyclone + China earthquakes, death toll may reach 150,000
God knows how many assassinations and such around the globe. Important people dying.

Are you ever worried about what has happened by the time you are fifty or something? Because I just came to that realization. It's kind of scary. D:

    Yes.

Then I realize Youtube came about, and then I start thinking of all the crazy revolutionary helpful shit the internet has wrought.

Then I remember 4chan, and I'm scared again.

I feel as though all out wars are necessary every now and then so as to assist in "resetting" the Earth's population, or some form of mass event to occur which causes a large loss of life so that the Earth does not become overrun with people.... Whle the death tolls may raise, it is worth noting that the China Earthquake may simply be the result of having too many people in one country at the same time, having this many people go away they should be good a a few years on population regrowth.... Look at lemmings, their population hits a point they start throwing themselves off a cliff, its not entirely unsimilar to us, we need more room to put people, so we start wars over land to put them in.

And the Earth is already a self corecting mechanism that will correct verious imbalances given enough time...

Then again, I do have an odd point of view on things....

Sorry, it was a poorly formed poke at the ongoing joke of how many asians there are over there, similar to the old joke of "You know if you lined up all the Chinese into a straight line it would never end due to the rate of re-population", not to mention that either China or Japan have rules about reproduction, something like only one or two boys per fmaily or something, and no more than 3 kids.... I forget....

Just a poorly phrased joke I suppose....

Whenever I get depressed or frustrated, about life or whatever, I step back and think about how right now (at least in the West) is probably the most amazing and exciting time to be alive in the history of humanity. More shit is happening at a faster pace than ever before, and overall the world seems to be turning rapidly into a better and more enlightened place.

If people living 200 or even 100 years ago were somehow transported to 2008, they would think we were a culture of sorcerers. We have magic powers!

Not going to have any significant impact on the population. It'd take something incredibly calamitous to drop the human population enough that significantly changes the magnitude of our environmental foorprint.

Or, you know, Western ideas about birth control and family planning spreading. In most Western societies the birth rate is about even with the death rate. These also happen to be the most peaceful* and prosperous societies.

    *With the exception of America.

It hasn't quite hit me yet just how many people have died between Myanmar and China. I mean 71,000 dead or missing with a pretty heavy lean on "dead" I'm betting - that's a shitload. Thats like...I don't know what to think about that. I guess I can't - it's just too far away.

Estimations that I have heard are that there's at least 50,000 dead in China because of the earthquake.

That's more than three of my hometowns.

For real. I actually explained that to my niece regarding the cyclone in Myanmar. She said it's strange that 100,000 people could have died in that, and didn't really understand how many people that actually would be. I said, "baby-girl, that's everyone in [hometown], and then [town next to home town] and [couple of more towns]. Everybody." She just stared at me and said that it was really sad.

Then she changed the channel to fucking Sponge Bob.

Well, WAS. I can't tolerate any episode made after the creator left.

I'm more intrigued about what could happen in the next 92 or so years. Will we see the mainsteam implementation of cybernetics? The rise of genetic engineering and its social aspects? Hell, we could see phase one of the Singubloodylarity in our lifetimes. Or, for that matter, we could see the 22nd century in our lifetimes.

Regarding the disasters of the last few weeks, I agree that they're horrible, but keep in mind that, given our 6 billion population and an average lifespan of, say, 50-60 years, we also have a death rate of about 300,000 people a day. The numbers get sobering and hard to conceive at this point, not that it makes deaths this sudden and violent any less tragic.
