Yay! News about the XBOX 360 Spring Dashboard Update!
Whitten also told us that there would be no spring dashboard update for Xbox 360 owners this year, saying that resources were instead focused on “building the proper infrastructure and scale for the service.” There will however be a change to DRM policy and a tool released next month that will allow 360 owners to re-license content to a single console—finally fixing the issue that forced gamers playing XBLA games to be connected to Xbox LIVE if their 360 broke down and was replaced.
But you do get the DRM fix, supposedly.
16:10 is for lamers anyways.
Also they are delisting unpopular XBLA games. Way to go, I suppose?
According to Whitten, XBLA titles that have been out for more than six months, have a Metacritic score of less than 65%, and have a conversion rate of less than 6% will be eligible for desliting. Microsoft will give three months of notice before these titles are removed.
If the metacritic rating was the only criteria the XBLA library would shrink 30% in three months.
But seriously, I really was looking forward to 16:10 support being added sometime in my lifetime
I hear that, but I've heard that the update is more trouble than it's worth from a few more technical people.
This whole announcement though reaks of depression. Besides the DRM thing both of the other two pieces of news are about not adding/taking away features.
Well, so much for the rumors that the spring dashboard update would add waggle controller support.
Glad to hear they're finally fixing the XBLA re-licensing problem, since I just got my replacement console. Looks like they actually "fixed" mine rather than giving me a different one. Based on what I've been hearing I can expect the replacement to conk out in, what, three months? Four?
Bah. Kinda sucks that they aren't adding any regular xbox games to the BC list. I kinda hate having 2 xbox games that I'll never be able to play unless I buy an old oxbox.

Likewise, I only have 1 original Xbox game and so far idon't think that I will ever get around to playing it.
What would be nice is, before totally removing those games, give anyone who gives a damn the ability to download then for free or like 5 for $5. They're gonna be gone soon, might as well give people one last shot at them.
I was about to give props to Microsoft for fixing the DRM thing when I read the announcement on Gamespot a little closer:
That isn't the only change in the works, according to Whitten. The size limit for games is going up from 150MB to 350MB, and in lieu of a spring dashboard update, Microsoft is instead addressing a common complaint regarding digital-rights management (DRM) on Live Arcade games. Next month, Microsoft will release a tool that lets users consolidate all of their purchases onto their most current console.
From this it sounds like DRM issues will be fixed for Live Arcade games only, not any DLC. I purchased a replacement Xbox 360 when mine began to age, and while I haven't been locked out of my $100.00's of dollars of DLC yet, I'm deathly afraid of the next Live outage. Let's hope Gamespot got the facts wrong.
Was hoping they'd get around to allowing you to send text and voice messages in the background, what with Live service being so unreliable now days. It's a hassle playing deathmatch and waiting five minutes to get started because your message won't send.

Don't forget that it's also for those that have an under 6% conversion rate. Most likely means that Yaris and Totemball will stay, as they're total free.

I'm actually fairly pissed about this for a number of reasons.
First off, the spring update was "due" a couple of weeks ago, at least in a traditional sense. To learn about its demise from some talking head suit in some crappy interview in unacceptable. If they're not releasing one at all, that means they've known for a LONG time they weren't going to release one. We should have known sooner. It's unprofessional.
Secondly, Microsoft has stated many, many times that the spring/fall updates were something we should expect. I've come to find great value in them as they were a SELLING POINT of the system. *I* pay 50 dollars a year for your live service. I fully expect to get more from that service than the ps3 owners do, and updates were something that helped me justify the cost, because I felt that I was subsidizing the expense.
Third, it's not my fault they've been having problems with the service. that's shit they should have been fixing all along ON TOP OF getting me my spring update. It's not a consolation that you're doing your fucking job that I pay you to do.
the fourth issue ties into the above issue; the DRM fix is not a 'replacement' happy time item for the spring update. It's something that should have been worked on seperately and provided asap. We also should have been informed that it was being worked on months ago as well.
This is really, really sloppy of them. I've been a huge supporter this generation because they've been honest and upfront with the community and really have seem to care about the consumer. But this new guy? Who the fuck is he and why do I give a shit about what he has to say?
I don't get why the heck they are even removing any games from the service. It's not like any of these titles take up that much server space in the first place.
It's not really about server space. It's more about perception, quality vs quantity, etc.
Right, and especially with their developers now sounding off about all of the shit people have to wade through to find their good games (N+ guys, right?), they're probably trying to make their service look more appealing.
Whatever, this shitty XBLA game thing probably could have been nipped in the bud if they'd actually like, looked at these games in the first place, and realized if we wanted 20 year old arcade remakes we'd buy them in 20 packs for $10 with the PS2 Midway Arcade Collections.
There was a rumor of leaked spring update list on Kotaku not too long ago. I was pretty happy with what it included for additional functionality and fixes, but now that Microsoft has denied us a update, Im kinda dissapointed that the list wasn't real. There was a few things on that list that Microsoft should definitley address, and some on there that they have confirmed they will address (DRM issues).
fuckers aren't ever going to give us another BC update, are they?
Considering all the rest of the games to be done require comparatively more work than most of the rest of the ones on the list and the fact that BC isn't turning out to be that big of a draw, I'd guess you're right.
They have a pretty strong ethic on the platform integrity. Which is why there are such strict rules as to what a game needs to even get on the list in the first place.
Basically, I think they dont want it to turn into some kind of youtube mess of 1% quality and 99% shit.
The only game I still want to see thrown on BC is Midtown Madness 3 so I can play it online again with the 360 headset. My original xbox headset bit the dust years ago and its just not the same without voice chat. Which if they ever put it on BC we would need to do a game on for it. God that game was fucking brilliant multiplayer.
As far as singleplayer games goes, I can just play them on my Xbox, which I need to keep around anyways for Steel Battalion, as its obviously never going to be BC.
Honestly if the DRM fix works well, and on all DLC and not just XBLA, I may eventually buy an Elite, or some form of newer manufactured 360 thats less likely to RRoD, has HDMI, and leaning towards an eventual Elite for the larger hard drive that costs far too much on its own anyways.

One could do the same with the PS2 as well. Such is the curse of being the highest selling console at its time. Its going to get the quick cash in crap.

I bought Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, because it was on the BC list.
Then I found out that Microsoft's idea of "compatable" was a bit different from a normal human being's definition.
So does the rest of the Prince of Persia trilogy. Hopefully before the new game? or SoT movie?
Considering all the rest of the games to be done require comparatively more work than most of the rest of the ones on the list and the fact that BC isn't turning out to be that big of a draw, I'd guess you're right.
so, you know, silver lining and all that
And in a related story, Castle Crashers is delayed again so they can add even more awesome.
(Kidding here).

This is after a long string of other developer complaints about the platform, from low margins to frequent delays.

And then make your 120 gig hardrive cheaper. Fuckers.
