Moving to NYC soon, housing advice?

In about a month and a half, I have to move to NYC for a job, and so I was wondering if anybody had advice for looking for housing.

Relevant Info:
-I'm going to be working in midtown Manhattan and earning $60k / year or so.
-I'm trying to find a place with one other roommate (same salary), we're trying to find a place with at most a half hour commute each way.
-We're not too picky on location, as long as its not to expensive and fairly safe
-I've heard that one common thing to do is to find a 1BR apartment, and convert the living room into a 2nd bedroom, but I'm somewhat concerned about privacy - I need my space and my peace and quiet.

Would anybody recommend various areas around NYC? I've heard that the rent on Roosevelt Island is pretty cheap.

Also, I'm trying to get a feel for how much I'd have to be paying each year in taxes, living expenses, and utilities, does anybody have any idea?

Thanks!
