I got my G1 at 17, took a Ministry-approved driver's course, eventually took my G2 test, failed, never took it again.
My G1 has since expired (I'm 24) and I'm now facing the reality of really needing a driver's license.
I understand I'll be needing to retake the G1 written test to get my G1 back, but will my having taken the Course I did when I was 17 count for reducing my time to take the G2 or will I have to take another?
It's less about the time and money to take the class again more than I'll be embarrassed taking it with a bunch of 16 year olds. >_>
I went through this same problem just a couple of weeks ago. My G2 expired, so I had to redo the G1 test. But they told me that you can breeze through the tests this time around; I could've booked my G2 test and my G test all in the same week.
Hey man, relax. I'm 21, almost 22, and I don't have my G1 yet. I didn't bother getting one, as even though I can afford a car, I can't afford the ~$470 on insurance they'll charge me per MONTH.
I decided last week to finally get a G1, so I could join my friends when they attend clubs. Yep, that's right, I haven't been to a club yet, either.
I'm so behind socially, so I just decided to man up (if it even applies to just getting a G1) and study for the test this week. I'll head over to Square One next Saturday morning and write the G1 test.
So don't worry that you're the only one our age taking the test with a bunch of high school kids. Sorry that I can't answer the rest of your question, though, as I don't really know the answer... :X Just wanted to give you some moral support.

Just to follow up on this for any lurkers interested...
I went out and got my G1 again today. Apparently even though I never went past G1 before it expired, I don't have to wait the 8-12 months before taking my driving test.

Now to just learn how to drive...
Thats awesome.
Regardless of the wait period, you might want to still take driving school to lower your insurance rates.
Also its pretty helpful for the actually learning how to drive part :P
I waited till pretty much the last minute to get my G after my G2 out of pure laziness. Whomever is going up for their G, trust me when I say it is the easiest thing in the world. It took me...10 minutes maybe and was much more lax than the G2 test was.

I did take a class, but it was seven years ago. :P Would that still count towards insurance? I'm thinking it would be a good idea to redo a few in-car professional lessons, but I don't know about doing the whole classroom-thing again.
I need to go for my G, and knowing my luck with driving tests, i should fail a few times.
Getting my G2 took 4 tries
I am pretty sure only if you have a valid reason. Being lazy isn't one of them.
I don't get people who just sit on their G2 so long.. I got my G the second I could (on my first try) and my insurance rate dropped a bit..
Just make sure to go to driving school, all big insurance places will give you a fairly nice discount (usually 10-20%) for it.
And to the person who said they have almost $500 a month in insurance.. wtf??
I'm 22 and I only pay $150 a month, plus I have a speeding ticket on my record, and a claim from insurance.
My old insurance were wanting $350 a month, I told them to screw off and found my current place for $180 (now down to $150)

All the online calculators I've used said I'll need to start paying $470, even if I take classes. Is it because it's an online calculator...? I'll get my G1 this or next weekend, and ask around during the period I take my G2 lessons. I really want a car, but the insurance is gonna kill me if it's over even $200 a month.

Ya, never trust the online calculators.
I went with state farm insurance, they are incredible compared to my previous one (pilot insurance)... I signed up with them even after a speeding ticket on my record, .. I pay insurance every 6 months, so my 6 month bill started at $1100 but is now $900

I am also a lazy fucker. I got my G2, never went for my G license. Hell, I've lived in Alberta for a year and I still only have my Ontario G2.
My G2 expired previously, I didn't have any wait time, i just had to redo both the written and driving test.
