One would assume you want the one that comes with the best mat as obviously the songs will be the same on either version, assuming the same version of the game.

Or get the free one online, step mania, with lots of free song packs, and buy some usb mats.

Assuming that she hasn't played before, I would personally go with Hottest Party, because it's geared towards those players. Universe is nice too, even though it has a better songlist. Either one would be fine, but if she's just a beginner, she might do well with Hottest Party first because it has more recognisable songs.

Had you had a PS2, I would've suggested MAX 2 or Extreme 2 (especially Extreme 2 because of the dance master mode, it goes from beginner songs all the way to Paranoia Survivor Max heavy), because those two have a pretty good songlist and learning curve.

Also, when she's starting out, give this advice to her. Don't return to the center after every step! It makes things harder than it should be.

I personally have the Wii version; it's alright. It has the option to have added hang movements with it (you can turn them off in the options).

I have a practically new version of DDR Univers that I'd sell you for very little if you're interested. It's a fun game, I just don't have the room or time for it.
