Landlord and A/C Control

First, I live in Rochester, Minnesota.

I live in an apartment building (furnished, one bedroom, just downtown and near my hospital - it's great). My landlord is a great lady, helps a lot, very quick with repairs - all around great gal.

When I moved in back in February, 2008 - she explained that we have central A/C, and it would be turned 'on' on the first hot day of the spring - in her own words "When everyone starts complaining". It's now May 26 and it's hot, people are complaining, but she told me that her boss (the supervising rental company) instructed her to wait another 2 weeks before turning it on.

Any suggestions on what to do? The local Menards is having a sale on window units, so I was tempted to just throw a few into my apartment and leave it at that, but should I make a larger stink past my "Hey, I wanna add my complaints to the rest to turn on the A/C" that I did last week.

Really I would just tough it out, No AC is not the worst thing I lived for 15 years without even a window unit in a kinda hot area. No sense in wasting the money.

A window unit might be useful even when the central A/C is turned on. However, she did make you a promise and now she's reneging on it. Its not her fault her bosses won't let her turn the A/C on but you are not the bad guy here for wanting what you were told you would get. Raise a stink if you want, you have the right.

It hasn't been that hot, It finally got above 80 for the first time yesterday. But that's not the point, I understand. Also different apartment configurations can really make a difference, and I assume you wouldn't be complaining if it wasn't bothering you.

If there's individual thermostats for the apartments I'd be more likely to complain about it. If there aren't I might get a small window unit, because as Walter said it could be useful. And if this is a problem every year, or you don't pay electricity, or you're considering moving within a few years, or the central air doesn't make it as cold as you'd like it would be even more useful.

Check your lease and see what it says about the AC.

Walk around nude with all of the windows open. When the landlady says people are complaining about seeing some naked person wandering around in the building, tell her you'd gladly wear clothes again once the AC is turned on. Make sure this conversation happens in the nude for extra oomph.

Alternatively - buy a nice strong desk fan and maybe one or two cheap box fans for the room.

I got home from running to a note posted on the front of the building. "A/C is on. Please stop calling the office."

So, I guess we broke management.

MurphyParadox, of course, I already do that.
