a.k.a. "Lylat Wars" for those in PAL-land.

So I've come to realize that it's been quite a long time since I've ever popped in the cartridge of this badass game to the N64, and I'm guessing the same could be said for many of you as well. And as much fun as the game is in single-player, I thought we could spice things up a little and try to really crank up the intensity with a little "GAME ON"/High-score competition.

Now as far as I know, there aren't any major differences between NTSC and PAL, and of the N64 and Virtual Console versions. If I'm wrong, please correct me. But for now, let's just stick with high scores of Normal and Expert difficulties.
NORMAL:
1) 1780 -- MetaHybrid
2) 1544 -- APZonerunner
3) 1516 -- WotanAnubis
4) 1489 -- FyreWulff
5) 1426 -- Zampano
6) 1402 -- Slicer
7) 1319 -- TheCrumblyCracker
8) 1279 -- BTP
9) 1246 -- Zeromus
10) 1218 -- Mars

EXPERT:
1) 1716 -- Paziel_pm
2) 1504 -- MetaHybrid
3) 1408 -- homargoodness
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
9)
10)

Of course, what's just as awesome as the game itself is the legendary collection of one-liners used in the game. If there are some that just want to make use of those one-liners for comedic effect (....I mean....it's just inevitable), well, I've got you covered as well.

EVERY ONE-LINER IN STARFOX 64! OH, YES!

(I just KNOW there's going to be something using "Cocky little freaks!" and "I can't leave Slippy hangin'!")

So, let's prevent Andross from destroying the galaxy by blowing things up by taking up the role of Fox and the gang, who get into their Arwings and save the galaxy by........blowing......things..up.WAIT! How is this not a plot-hole?

Oh screw it, let's just have some fun and play for some high-scores!

LET'S GO!
RUMBLE PAK! SHIT YEAH!

I've got this on the VC, it's such a great game. Ate up so, so much time of my childhood.

My greatest moment was by far on Fortuna, when I killed Wolf just as the clock hit zero. Got a medal for that, too.

I got this game for my birthday, along with Goldeneye.

it was one of the greatest birthdays EVER. Off the top of my head, only 9/9/99 was better.

StarFox 64, IMO, is the best N64 game. Period.

EDIT: Why the fuck can't nintendo make a good sequel? Just give us more of the same and it'll be awesome.

God, seriously. They had a fantastic formula to work with, and then they shit all over it for some reason. This game is pretty much the only reason I have an N64 hooked up right now.

I agree, StarFox 64 is the best N64 game ever, and in my all time top five. It still irritates me that the VC version doesn't have rumble support. I loved the rumble pak, and so the game always feels weird to me without the rumble. I would actually pay Nintendo again just to get the rumble back, because that's how strong my nostalgia is.

I don't know if I'll have the chance to participate in this fine and noble high score competition, but I'm proud to see this thread.

Does it still stands the test of time? Is it worth a VC purchase without the nostalgia factor? I have fond memories of the game but I don't know if it's still good by today's standards.

I will say it was great back then, and certainly merits that spot, but bad 3D doesn't age well like 2D does, and at this point in time, Star Fox is certainly bad 3D.

EDIT: Different thread but TSR I downloaded the NG Sigma demo and am about to try it out.

I've considered buying this on VC, but I haven't done so because of the lack of rumble in N64 games on VC.

Man they made such a big deal about the rumble pack for this game.

That's because it was the first game to utilize the rumble pack. In order for the peripheral to be successful, Nintendo needed to make it popular.

that's why there were videos such as this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckS5x-0Heho

I must have watched that about a million times as a kid.

Crud! We were so close to Venom!

I've been thinking about hooking up the N64 to play this recently, then there's this thread. Funny how that works.

I didn't play Starfox 64 much, but my brother used to spend entire Saturdays on it and I'd watch him.

I can't BELIEVE I lost to this SCUM!

I enjoyed Starfox Assault, even if Star Wolf's posse were jokes in it.

When you fight them in 64, it's genuinely an epic battle.

Difference between Starfox 64 and Lylat Wars: In Lylat Wars the language can be set to Lylat, all the characters warble and make noises instead of talking, as in the SNES game.

While this option would be appreciated in the later titles in the series, Starfox 64 had some pretty awesome voice work. Every title since has been a disappointment in this regard.

Also, last year we used to play this all the time in my dorm. Had an hour before class? Thats more than enough time to beat the game and grab a medal or two.

We got so good at the game, I could beat the first level with my eyes closed probably.

Greatest path in Star Fox 64 is to lose to star wolf on Fortuna on the easy path, then to hit the warp in Sector X, which sets up a truly epic rematch in Venom, where Star Wolf is even more powerful than before.
