Ripping a DVD

So, I want to rip a copy of a few DVD's that I want to put away and never use the original discs again.

I have the hardware, but I can't seem to find a good program to do this. I have only one disc drive so I need to RIP it to my hard drive and then burn it to the disc. The program that I tried, called Magic or somesuch sucked. First it copied only the audio files, then when I tried to rip it by chapter it took about 15 hours to rip 2 chapters. LAME!!

What program would you guys suggest? I have Vista, and also Ubuntu on my system. I would prefer to RIP in Ubuntu but I will do it in whichever program would be the best, regardless of the platform.

Also what file type would you use (Divx etc.) Forgive me but I have never ripped a DVD and I am not particularly computer smart.

Thanks Guys

I'm in a similar predicament. I like to watch DVD TV shows, but am lazy and don't like changing the discs. Since I have began watching a lot of movies streaming from my computer to my PS3, I wanna know what's the best way to rip DVDs so that I can do this. Format isn't an issue since I use TVersity that auto converts it, but I would like to keep the file size fairly low.

I use DVD Shrink to rip and DVD Decrypter to burn. DVD Shrink lets you choose what on the DVD you want to rip and it lets you take off certain things you don't want on the DVD, like any extras or anything like that. It even lets you take out audio tracks and other little stuff. It basically lets you customize what you want on your copied DVD.

After I rip and am left with an .ISO file, I open DVD Decrypter, pop in a blank DVD+R, and burn it.

What might you have to do differently if you want the DVD to play on a commercial DVD player that you hook up to your TV? I have been wondering about this as well.

So, basically I can rip individual chapters. So like for a TV show that has 8 episodes to a disc, I can rip them all individually, rather than one long episode?

What these guys are suggesting will work fine. However, if you'd like it in the simplest form possible, go to www.imtoo.com and pay them 30 bucks for the DVD ripping software. I have it, I bought it, and it's wonderful. It automatically rips your DVD into a watchable format (avi, mpeg, and a number of others) and it's pretty quick. Took my 2GHZ Athlon machine about an hour and a half to rip a full length movie. Obviously if you want it ripped into a size like 800x600 or a bigger widescreen format it takes 3 hours or so, but the results are ready to watch as soon as they are done ripping.

Edit: Also, you can still take out all the menus and extras and whatnot to save drive space.

I use DVD Decrypter + AutoGK to backup my DVDs. It's not all that easy, but once you get them configured, it does the whole job automatically.

    *EDIT*
My bad, I missed the part where you wanted to burn them back. You can skip the AutoGK in that case, but DVD Decrypter will pull the raw VOB files.

Absolutely. It's a small program with a very easy interface. Give it a shot. It's all I ever use.
