They are, but a lot of sources omit it. That's were li-ligers come from. I don't know if li-ligers are ever fertile, but it takes a lot of work just to get them to survive to adulthood. The same is true with ti-tigons.

Can you tell by the pixels?

It was the first GIS result that wasn't a liger.

yeah lions and panthers can bone too

and a bunch of other big cats

because they're technically the same species, just different sub species

kind of like dogs and wolves
It should be pointed out that although they are genetically compatible, they occupy different niches in the environment and such, are considered different species. Plus the hybrids would never survive in the wild. This is called post-zygotic isolation and is an evolutionary mechanism that prevents new species from being formed.

oh okay i think i'm confusing genus and species with species and sub species

or that may have been how it was phrased when i read it
If two animals are the same species, then they can produce fertile offspring together. Lions and tigers are the same genus but not the same species so they cannot produce fertile offspring.

Lions and tigers are in the same genus, but are different species. At least that's been my understanding.
    This is correct. Science approves.
