Stitches, Scars, and not getting them.

Long story short a friend and I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and now i've got a rather nasty looking gash running from the corner of my head where my hairline begins to my eyebrow. The cut isn't continuous and nor is it deep. It's actually separated into different areas so the overall length of the thing isn't long, I'd say a little over 1/2 of an inch long in the deepest spot and the other cut is smaller and already beginning to heal properly. I did not get stitches and the injury was inflicted on Saturday so. . .if I do need stitches is it too late to get them? There's no bleeding or pain in the area.

My main concern is scarring. It's on my face. I do not want a noticeable scar on my face. What should I be doing to prevent scaring? At the moment i'm cleaning it in the morning and before bed. Using hydrogen peroxide, neosporin, and lotion under a gauze that's taped to my head in the neatest way. Anything else I should be doing to monitor the progress or help prevent an ugly fucking scar on my face?

oh and as far as the depth of the main cut that concerns me i'd say it is less than a 10th of a cm.

not sure about the stitches however i had surgery on my face which I had stitches. Once it starts to heal use vitamin E oil on it every day and it will lessen the scar tissue.

Why wouldn't you want a scar on your face? You could be so badass...

But you and the second poster have basically outlined all the things you need to do to take care of it. Most importantly: don't scratch at it!

Lay off the hydrogen peroxide. It can interfere with the healing process (it's good for cleaning fresh wounds, not so much for old wounds). Continue with the Neosporin, though.

And with certain people this will actually makes sure you get a scar. (My sister has a nasty one on her arm because my mother was convinced that hydrogen peroxide stopped scarring.)

Neosporin is the way to go.

Alrighty. Boy. . .having a huge bandage on your forehead sure does suck. When can I start walking around without the unsightly thing?

Keep using vitamin E oil for a while after it is pretty much healed up, you don't want the area to get dried out as this will make it more likely for scar tissue to form. You don't need to slather it on, just enough to keep the affected skin covered.

Rubbing some cocoa butter lotion with vitamin E has faded a lot of my old scars a lot.

Also, for the love of pete, stay out of the sun! New skin is ridiculously sun-sensitive, so you want to use some heavy-duty sunscreen and wear a lot of hats.

When the scab falls off on its own.

Rub some bio oil into it. I had some nasty scars from playing football that healed up pretty nicely by using this stuff. It's also recommended for pregnant women who want to avoid stretch marks.

At this point you can safely stop everything but mild soap and water for cleaning once or twice a day (i.e. no more neosporin or peroxide). Vitamin E based creams or oils are good and so is this:

By the way scar on forehead = secksi

I agree with Betelguese. I used that stuff on the incisions from my gall blader removal and only one of them is even visible anymore.

If the wound can be closed with a bandage or butterfly pads, stitches are not needed. Stitches are required when the edged of the wound are open and cannot be held together (during healing) otherwise. Shallow/superficial lacerations shouldn't need stitches, regardless of the length of the wound.

    -edit-

And it's not terribly relevant but there was a guy in my boot camp division who had a bunch of facial scars from being attacked by a crazy person with a knife. They were so sexy. He was fascinating to look at.

Guys it doesn't help that a lot of guys are in love with facial scars D:

I think it's healing up at a pretty decent pace. I'll have a look at it when I change the gauze tonight but one of the smaller scars is nearly totally scabbed over. It seems that the largest scab is still. . .i'm not sure how to put this but forming into the proper position to make the scab. There's clearly progress though

Girls like them, too. Also, we're trying to make you feel better about it in case it does scar up a little bit.

Sir, please post a picture so that we may admire your would / future scar.

I have a finger length "V" on my head behind my right ear from where a german shepherd bit my head at the age of 4. It is 100% badass. All my life I had buzzcuts, so it was unavoidably noticable, and for a while I was self conscious about it. You could not look at me without seeing it. I'm pretty proud of it now though. Too bad my name doesn't start with v...

eh, stitches aren't really needed if you can close the wound some other way, plus its going to depend on deepness.

just keep it clean and don't pick at it and it should heal fine on its own.

I have had bloody injuries that turned to scabs that should have been horrible scars, but by keeping them soaked with vitamin E, they eventually fell off leaving perfectly smooth skin beneath them.

    Vitamin E. Shit works.
