I looked around, so I apologise if there's already a SR topic.
GTAIV has left me craving more (the mark of a good game) and I've begun to look to Saints Row for my fix. I've read that it's the best GTA knock off. However, I couldn't stand previous GTA games - the combat, driving, and especially story were all too poorly done. I love the combat and driving of GTAIV, and it's story is one of the best I've ever experienced.
That said, if I go into Saints Row, will I be disappointed? Does it have the old clunky GTA3-SA style aiming system, or the now-familiar over the shoulder style system? How is driving - do cars have weight? And the story - does it ever have any stupid "kill this guy with a dildo" style missions, or is it's story actually good?
Saint's Row is a damn fine game, and I too picked it up craving more GTA. It has a free aim system, the cars control well (maybe a little too well, since you pretty much never slide) and there is so much to do. I find myself actually rushing through GTA to get back to Saint's Row and Bully.
well, I've found I CAN enjoy free roaming games, just not the classic GTA3 trilogy. I dunno why, but the old GTA trilogy doesn't do it for me. Dead rising, for example, was a blast, and I love GTAIV.
Saint's Row was an amazingly well done GTA-clone for its time. IMHO, it set a decently high bar for GTA IV to cross. It had decent visuals, the voice acting was excellent, the gun mechanics were spot on, etc. The problem is that GTA IV surpassed it, so going back to play it ... not so sure.
That said, I do think playing Saint's Row lessened the "wow factor" for GTA IV, for those of us who played it. Many of the things you see in GTA IV were attempted, in some fashion, in SR. Just perhaps not as polished.
I think it'll be fine if you don't expect too much from it. If you're expecting something better than GTA IV, then you're sure to be disappointed.
Saints Row is a damn fine game. I have actually 100%'d it, very fun. The missions are pretty fun, mostly shooting stuff, which is fine considering the shooting system is great. However the story is SO awful. But hopefully you can laugh at how bad it is.
But the real reason I love it is the customization, seriously I must have spent 5 hours making cars.
It's more like eating your sammiches with mayo, and figuring that maybe every once in a while it's nice to eat something other than mayo.
Also mayonnaise is pig disgusting.
For serious, ew.
Row is a pretty good game, it's a fair leap between gtaiv and the previous installments, with lots and lots of urban warfare. Lots of it. Constantly. Far more so than any grand theft game, if you're at all violent minded.
I'm not expecting GTAIV. I'm expecting something more on the GTAIV scale than GTA3-SA. Especially in the 3 areas I described above. Does that describe SR?
To me, the most important change needs to be aiming. Is aiming similar to GTA3-SA? Because if it is, that's a major deal breaker. If it's over-the-shoulder, then it's bought. IMO, that's the perfect action aiming system. If it's anything in between... then I guess I'm really relying on you guys for opinions.
It's a really fun game.
Earning rep to play missions gets a little tedious towards the end of the game, but other than that the missions are a blast.
More cartoony than GTA IV, but less features.
There's going to be a sequel to Saint's Row at the end of the summer, so we'll see how it washes out. From what they've shown so far, GTA4 will be a lot prettier, but there's some polishing to be done over the next few months.
ETA: It's a hell of a lot better than True Crimes... the other big GTA clone.

I never played GTA3-SA, although I do remember lots of people bitching about the gun controls. From what I remember, SR is over-the-shoulder. I had no problems with combat in that game. In fact, I remember thinking, "The next GTA better damn steal this control scheme."

Hm, without playing SR I disagree. I loved GTA's gun control scheme. It was absolutely perfect for me.
Saints Row is good. GTA IV makes improvements upon it, yes, but it's still damn good. And it makes GTA look serious, as long as you can get into the inherent cheese of the gang setting.
SR2 is coming out this year if memory serves, though. You might have more luck with that.
Flight wasn't a lot of fun either in the GTA3-series. I don't know why they insisted on stuff like using the planes, helicopters, and other BS in the standard missions for San Andreas, while also making the controls wonky as hell. Optional missions, sure... but the airport graveyard missions drove me insane.

Flight in GTA3, and to a lesser extent VC (excluding helicopters), was really more of a glorified physics bug. You could do it, but it sure as hell wasn't ever polished.
Flying in SA however was awesome once you got the controls down. The missions themselves tended to range from tolerable to shit, but free flying was one of the best things in the game.

Definitely. One of the moments that sticks out in my mind is the one where you have to pick up Sweet late in the game and take him back to the 'hood.
I took a helicopter.
It was EPIC, and I felt fit with the whole storyline really well.
Pretty much, but at the same time it's just not the same.
Well if your sonic CD:JazzJackrabit::GTAIV:Saints Row analogy holds true then i'd be pretty happy. I've already explained that I'm well aware that Saints Row WON'T be as good as GTAIV, but I'm looking for something similar.
In some ways it's better than GTA IV, in a lot of ways it is a lot worse. It's kinda fun though, and the GTA IV crew lifted more than one idea from it.
Could you not just head to the nearest Blockbuster and rent a copy first to see if it's your cup of tea?
Anyways, what exactly was it about IV's aiming that you felt was better? The auto aiming? Because I swear all the GTA ones have felt pretty much the same to me. But either way,
Try looking at that and the few times they use guns and see if that's your cup of tea. If you absolutely despised the old game's aiming system, you probably won't like this either.

Having not played it, that's all i can offer.

But I really really liked it before I played GTA IV.
Saints Row is $20 now, right?
All of these things were remedied in GTA4.
There is no reason to play Saint's Row.
Why would anyone do it?

Also, I love collecting the cars.

GTA3-SA had some AWFUL gun controls.

The game was really good, I thought. The story is nothing special, but it's very fun to play.
In a lot of ways, SR feels like the beta version of GTA4.
so... standard FPS controls in a third person setting? No over the shoulder zoom?
Well, I'm downloading the demo.

More or less, also note that the game is a bit more polished then the demo.
Note that I beat SPM... what, a year ago? And I haven't touched it since.
So... it's a good thing? Because Jazz Jackrabbit was ten flavors of Awesome.
