Only win xp Upgrade disc, am I screwed? (Solved)

Original problem spoilered as it might still be part of the problem because the disc is scratched up, but not as much of the problem as I thought.

I feel quite stupid now, because when I pulled the XP disc out of my computer I noticed the word "upgrade" on the disc. This would definitely explain why I've been having the troubles installing that I have. I know we have another copy of XP around the house and a copy of 2000, but I can't find either of them with any of the computer stuff at all.

Would I be able to get around having to have a previous install of some version of Windows if I use the boot discs, or am I back to being screwed on this again?
As the title says, that is the jist of the problem I'm having. The Windows XP disc that I have is currently too scratched to be able to do an install from. My computer can recognize that it is a Windows disc of some kind as it starts the instal process, but once it actually gets to the install windows step, it simply cannot read it anymore. I looked at the Microsoft site to attempt to get help, but I can't find any sort information on this and was going to try and send their custumor support an email but all the options I was getting were not helpful.

I looked at making boot discs to run off of, but it sounds like those need a usable CD to be able to finish the install. I was thinking about getting Vista to try and fix this problem, but it sounds like I need an install of either XP or 2000 to get the cheaper upgrade version. I haven't been able to find anyone to borrow a disc from yet since I would assume that the product key isn't directly linked with the CD that it came with, and that any Windows XP install CD of the same kind would work.

So, am I screwed unless I can find a usable disc or is there some sort of solution that I haven't been able to think of yet? I wouldn't think something that really is this simple of a problem would have ended up being so difficult to solve.

Places like Blockbuster or EB repair discs as good as new for a couple of bucks.

Wow, I hadn't even thought about that. Disc repair had come up between me and my brother before, but just to the extent of those at home disc repair things that I have yet to ever see work. Nothing I can do about it right now since it's the middle of the night, but I'll do some calling around I guess when morning comes.

    Thanks.

Just borrow an XP cd from a friend and use your license key on it. Media doesn't really matter, but licenses do.

Download it? There are these buccaneers, I guess we could call them pirates, and they hang out in this bay... I'm sure they could help you out.

Whenever I need to reinstall my OS I always find it easier to just burn a new disk with an ISO I keep on my portable hard drive, rather than hunt for my original disk, clean it up a bit, sit through 80% of an install only to see it fail... You can probably find one slipstreamed with SP3 so you don't have to run any updates after you install it.

You may want to further explore the MS Support option, they may be able to provide you with a replacement disc for a couple bucks. I know its not the same, but they sent me an x64 disc for my copy of Vista for like $6 or something.

This might be a good resource:

As suggested above, you use your own license key. Personally, I see it as getting it from a friend from afar who I don't know.

    *sigh*

I did bad didn't I? And it seemed like such a good idea at the time.

I can't remember all the particulars, but wasn't there a way where you could use a win98 boot disk (which are available for download), format the drive with that (so that it boots to a c:\windows prompt), and that would satisfy the previous version problem? Hopefully someone remembers in more detail what I'm talking about.

So it doesn't matter at all the the previous versions of Windows I can find are upgrade discs, I can still use them for the requirement?

If so this makes this whole problem a lot simpler then I had first thought, and makes me annoyed with microsoft saying on everything that I need a previous installation or something.

Yea, I seem to have answered my own question. I'm going to go ahead and call this solved.
