Over the past four days and three nights I went without sleep (work related) before having a long deep sleep last night at four am through today. Today, old memories of college have been coming up and thoughts of the MANY three night in a row losses of sleep or any real rest, the handful of four night, and the one five night period. Many great projects came from that lack of sleep along with a couple brushes with insanity and death. It should be mentioned that I don't drink coffee or (usually) soda, and don't take anything to keep me awake.
What's the longest you've gone without sleep, and more importantly why did you (or do you) go without when you do? What have been some of the side effects and situations to present themselves in your sleepless state and how did you deal with them?
Weekly, I go for three days with only about 6 hours of sleep. The first span is usually 28 hours awake, then a 3 hours nap. I work overnight 13 hours shifts, from 6pm to 7am, and then have to come home and get my older 2 sons ready for school. Even once they're off on the bus I have to stay up with my 4 year old since he stays home. I get to nap when he naps.
I work Wed and Thr nights this way, then come Fri night I try to shift myself back to being awake during the day and sleeping that night.
I'm probably shaving 10 years off my life but there's not much I can do about it right now.

I've done around 60 once. Just couldn't get my school and work schedules to work out so I just kept myself amused in the wee hours by surfing the internet.
Worst one was 36 hours sitting at a computer, excepting bathroom breaks.

I'll probably be dead in 5 years given how terrible the sleep schedule was for so long.

four days and nights with maybe half an hour of sleep each night
I was playing with my band at a music festival and there were lots of drugs and I was supposed to sleep in a tent and that dog won't hunt
I went home and slept about 32 hours over 48 hours afterwards though, that was awesome.

Work.
At least there's a drafting table (or used to be) to goto as well.

fingers crossed for lan party
I really don't know, I just did a bit of homework, checked the forums, talked to the various time zone folks in vent, played some flash games, and suddenly realized that it was getting light outside for the second time.
I don't understand how anyone can be on a computer that long.
The longest I ever games for was probably 14 hours and it wasn't WoW amazingly, it was Tribes, and it was glorious.
If I play WoW for more than 6 hours straight I feel dirty.
But I'm at that point in my life now where the fact that I work on a computer 9 hours a day for money sort of makes coming home to yet another desk and another computer seem so much less appealing.
The single worst i've ever gone was 5 days in a row painting, in a house, by myself, doing nothing else, sleeping for about 2-3 hours, then going another 4.
That was the most Batman sleep i'd ever had in my life and wish it happened more often.

Maybe it's because I'm naturally an incredibly lazy person, but I simply can't do this. I lack the work ethic to finish six hour work days with a smile on my face, the idea of spending over 24 hours wrapped up in something like that boggles the mind.

There's something about that stayed up all night feeling. Achy back, joints all creaky, scare the shit out of myself driving because my eyes will try to close and I'll force myself awake and see double for a few seconds.

I played WoW for about 28 hours straight once. Now I'm lucky if I can tolerate it for 28 minutes, though I just can't seem to cancel...
something about the sun setting has me thinking it's okay to talk to myself
During the fifth day of the five day lack, I eventually started bounding around the house and screeching like a monkey because it felt more normal than talking. There had been nobody in the house the whole time, I hadn't left the house that whole time, and communication didn't really mean much other than to express pain or anger or happiness.

My favorite is riding my bike home after like fifteen hours of drinking and shenanigans. I've only had to do it once or twice, but it's great just wooshing down the street utterly intoxicated at like 4:30 in the morning while it's still dark and deserted.

Going to work without a good day's sleep is horrible, but when the night is over and you climb into bed it feels sooo good.
In what context do you spend 36 hours sitting at a computer?
without huge amounts of caffeine or amphetamines I can only manage about 20 hours

Just stayed up for 24 hours yesterday. Was forced to, though.
Hate being up for too long.
But sleeping is soooooooo good.
