Steam friends in OS X

Awhile back I read someone had figured out a way to talk to your friends via Steam on Jabber (which could be used via iChat) or Adium. I can't seem to find the article, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to do this.

Also does anyone know of an app that lets you view a current player count in a server? It would be nice to be able to check to see if my server is full + friends are playing before dual booting into Windows.

    For checking servers, try Gametiger. I haven't used it since the HL1 era but I presume it still works (though it might not always be perfectly up to date).
