RUN DINO RUN

I found this nifty little game where you play as a Dino out running extinction. The game uses 8-Bit looking graphics and has both single-player and Multi-player (online) modes.

It can be found here: http://pixeljam.com/dinorun/

I played this a ton a few weeks ago. I found myself creeped out by the ambient noises, after the music died down at the end of a stage. Also the big WHOA moment when the music goes away and that rumblesome pyroclastic cloud of doom is on your ass. AND throwing curses at those effin triceritops for being so goddamn slow on hill sides. Good times.

I beat this a few times a few weeks ago. My only complaint is that your multiplayer dino is the same as your single player dino. Gotta grind and level up to be competitive.

Of course, there are major bonuses for finding the big eggs, eating thus and so many critters a round, rock surfing (that one took me a while to figure out. Try it, it's rather hard.), and a bunch of other neat random things, kinda like Xbox achievements.

Pixeljam also said a hat code in one of their podcasts. It's TOTINOS, if anyone wants their raptor to look like some kind-o destructoid robotman.

Old by internets standards, but really really awesome so it balances out fine. By the guys who did Gamma Bros, which I love with all my heart. Worth checking out.

Man, I really enjoy this game. I never could get that egg inside the volcano in a later level, damnit.

For those confused by the DNA system, you get one point for every 8 critters of a type you eat. And more for riding boulders and saving dino super-eggs and doomsurfing and other cool stuff.

This is from memory now, so I might have it wrong or something, but...

With a bit of luck and a lot of jumping. If you're in the air, and the wave gets close, it gives you a little extra boost forward, so if you keep jumping you should be able to remain on the crest for a long time.

Problem is, as soon as you land and a rock or whatever stops you for long enough, you're behind the crest and you're sort of screwed, not least because you can't really see your obstacles. So you have to be a bit tactical in choosing when to jump.

Really? I think you can get it just by running right in front or in the beginning of the cloud, but I've only done it once or twice.

This is depressing, but also awesome. Now we know how the dinosaurs died out. Because of a big doomcloud. Unfortunately, I now have something else to distract me from work.

Edit: multiplayer seems completely busted. I can't do anything in the lobby.

I know an 8-bit console couldn't have pulled off this game quite like it's done here, but i wonder if something similar came out in the 80s, would it be seen as a classic now?

If an 8-but console had managed to pull off the single-player campaign (as short as it is) I think it would have become a classic (if not a cult one) just on the basis that you can do the DNA traits and all the animations and the great soundtrack.

Well THATS not a pain in the ass at all, apparently one of the super eggs can only be reached by piggybacking on a triceratops, and managing to get a decent jump while on the things inclined back as it trundles up a steep slope. Assuming it hasn't decided to turn around for no good reason.

Oh, and you can't just nab it and let the approaching doom overtake you (as its probably covering half your screen at this point), it only counts if you carry the egg to the end of the level. JOY.

:edit: I'm down to the super egg mentioned above and the one you need to beat Insane to get. I wonder which I'll end up getting first...

Ah, the buggy hat trick. I was getting a Master Chief hat like that, though it stopped the next day. Refresh the page, you'll have the hat.

Unlocking the Planet D speedrun is easy. Beat an Insane Challenge. Its easy because it unlocks even if you have cheats active.

As far as I know, there's only the two time shifts to get.
:edit: scratch that, there's a third at 150 eggs.

Speaking of eggs, the only trophy I don't have gold is eggs saved. Currently sitting at 4050 saved, hopefully the gold is at 5000

When you reach Survival. Basically, every time you reach the happy little place with other little raptors and you don't have to run from doom anymore, you've saved a dino.
