This Week on XBLA: An awesome Star Fox clone & a cool puzzle game

edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
So this week on XBLA, we get two games at 800 points a piece. The first is called Aces of the Galaxy and it appears to be a rail shooter ala Star Fox complete with co-op, cool explosions, and a slow motion ability. Here's a trailer: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33966.html & here's the XBox website: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/a/acesofthegalaxyxboxlivearcade/default.htm

The second game is called Roogoo and it's a 3D puzzle game where you're trying to match up aliens in various pegs while other aliens try to stop you? Yeah, I have no clue how on earth that's supposed to work, but early impressions from people who have tried the game are very positive. Here's the site: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/r/roogooxboxlivearcade/default.htm

Yeah, no kidding. I don't think I had even heard of this game before now, but that trailer blew me away. Looks like a very fast paced and fun game and seeing as how I can name the rail shooters that are still fun today on one hand (Panzer Dragoon Orta, Rez, Star Fox 64, and Sin & Punishment), another worthy game is more than welcome.

Actually looks pretty cool, and maybe worth buying. However...

    Aces of the Galaxy?

    "Human scum: prepare for annihilation?"

A big fat blue alien making fisticuffs?

This is gonna have more cheese than Wisconsin, ain't it?

I think the title Aces of the Galaxy comes from the old Aces flight combat series IP which Sierra still owns.

Also, I'm much more interested in this game now.

I'd buy both of those, been looking forward to each of them in their own right, but sheesh

Rock Band and GTAIV need completing.

And P.A. Adventures still needs buying.

The pile of games, it never ends!

Aces of the Galaxy looks well made, decent visuals at least. And Star Fox clones are always welcome.

Page 2 my aching ass. This game looks awesome! I love how they even have the barrel rolls in there.

I'll pay double if the game shouts "DO A BARREL ROLL!" during the tutorial.

Oh wow. I am pretty excited about this now!

There could even be awesome bosses. Only thing that can make it better is if they can't let me do that.

Edit: Rewatching the trailer I'm seeing a lot of the same kind of enemy in the same kind of formation. Now I'm still excited, but somewhat worried. Could this be the legendary 'cautious optimism'?

I just tried the Aces demo. I like it a lot. Fast paced, great graphics, catchy music, and it looks like it'll have decent longevity w/25 levels.

Here are the IGN reviews of Roogoo:
    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/878/878952p1.html?RSSwhen2008-06-03_152800&RSSid=878952
    and Aces of the Galaxy:
    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/878/878506p1.html

They liked both games, 8.4 for Aces & 8.5 for Roogoo. For Aces of the Galaxy, they said that it can get a little monotonous in long play and could have used some end-level bosses, but other than those two complaints, it's a blast. They liked Roogoo for its originality and the fact that instead of merely increasing the speed, later level added new gameplay mechanics which spiced things up.

No bosses, but the action can get pretty frantic even in the 2 demo levels especially on hard. I can only imagine how the later levels are.

Tried RooGoo and it's surprisingly fun. I can see how it could get quite involved later on (sadly, the demo was mostly just tutorial levels).

The fact that it got an 8.4 without big bosses is impressive.
I'm going to try it but I love me some big bosses.

Maybe if it sells well we'll get a sequel with them.

There are bosses, they just aren't big or at the end of a level. They harass you DURING the level, and you have to try to take them out when they come around.

Try out the demo and you'll see what I mean.

    Warlords!!

Ok, someone dropped the ball here. Usually I would hear something about it by now. I need points and I need it NOW. They actually didn't screw it up this time. Even though warlords needs spinners, it feels decent with the D-pad. I swear I need some online warlords action!

Best way to describe it in a hurry.

Warlords was the second major game to have 4 player multiplayer. Super pong was the first.

I love aces of the galaxy. i need some people to play co-op with, i have yet to convince any of my friends to buy it. feel free to add me if anyone wants to play some.

Roogoo was interesting. I kinda wish the demo was a bit longer, because i feel that it was just getting into the stuff that i might find interesting, because the early stuff just felt like i was playing with those kids toys with the shapes. Dunno, i've got other XBLA games i want to buy before i consider this, since my 360 is still pretty new. And i know i'm late to the party, but XBLA Uno is awesome.

I love the first few days of an XBLA release. Played through it last night a few times and ended up 35th on the normal leaderboard.

I know it wont last, but it did feel cool.

Aces is awesome, but the music is really, really bad.
