Router not working with DSL

Alright, so I have a DSL line coming in, hooked up to a Linksys WRT54G.

It only works if I hook the modem directly to the PC, copy the IP/Gateway/DNS, change the router to Static IP, and enter those it. It works great like that, for a while, then it doesn't work at all, because the IP has changed.

The problem is its not going through the right gateway or dns when hooked up to the router.

I can't figure out how to direct it correctly using the router with DHCP with my linksys router, am I doing something wrong? How can I get this hooked up and set as dhcp?

I've tried powercycling, fyi.

thanks.

The router shouldn't be static IP. It should most likely be set up to connect via a PPPoE connection. What ISP are you on? They should have instructions somewhere on how to set it up with a router.

What's the make/model of your DSL modem?

The DSL modems I've seen (and have) were all 1-port routers. You'll need to set it up in bridge mode.

Wait. When your modem is plugged directly into the pc, are you copying the IP information from the windows ip configuration tool? If so, plug the modem into your computer, and do an ipconfig /release. Then shut your modem off. Hook up your router, and make sure it's set to DHCP provided your ISP uses DHCP and it should automatically acquire a WAN IP address.

PirateJon is right though, if your pc gets an IP from the modem itself, you'll need to put the modem into bridge mode and shut off its internal dhcp server. Chances are your ISP is using DHCP and binding to your pc's mac address, so after awhile, your lease is running up and your router won't bother trying to renew it because it's set to static.
