Wal-Mart gives $100 for PS3, other Blu-ray players June 8-14
Not to sound like a spammer, but I figured this bit of news might be of at least slight interest to people here.
For one week, if you buy any Blu-ray player in the store -- Engadget is saying that includes the PS3 -- they'll give you a $100 gift card. Also select Blu-ray movies will sell for $15 that day.
It was picked up by Reuters (respected worldwide news service for mainstream papers), so it looks like the real deal:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - With the high definition DVD format war settled, Wal-Mart Stores Inc is now aggressively promoting sales of Blu-ray players.
The world's largest retailer said on Tuesday that from June 8-14, it is offering a $100 Wal-Mart gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player in its stores.
Wal-Mart has also increased the brands of Blu-ray players it sells, adding Magnavox, Samsung and Panasonic, and it will sell select Blu-ray movie titles for $15 starting June 8, including "3:10 to Yuma", "Shooter" and "300".
Until earlier this year, consumers who were seeking sharper movies on high-definition DVDs had to choose between two competing standards -- the Blu-ray high-definition DVD format, developed by Sony Corp and the rival HD DVD camp, which was backed by Toshiba Corp.
The competing standards stalled the shift to the new technology in the $24 billion home DVD market as consumers, worried they would be stuck with obsolete technology, avoided buying the players.
But in February, Wal-Mart said it planned to exclusively back the Blu-ray format and later that month, Toshiba said it would end its HD DVD business.
Wal-Mart, which has been working to boost sales of consumer electronics, also said on Tuesday it has completed the redesign of its consumer electronics department in stores nationwide.
The redesigned departments include more space for consumers to test video games, an expanded selection of GPS navigation products, a new display center for computers and a bigger selection of high-definition TVs.
Well, they have. Porn backing HD didn't win HD the war, in as cut and dry terms as you stated. Everyone backing out of HD and the subsequent cessation of anyone making HD, let alone being able to find it in any big chain, is what ended it. Blu-ray won, HD lost, porn turned out to be inconsequential, enjoy that 200$ brick of a peripheral for your 360.
Maybe you should go watch Peter Jackson's King Kong.
The deal is in effect this week, as well, at least for the PS3. Sold three yesterday and the register prompts to scan a gift card and loads it up with $100.

the hd player is pretty cheap now, and you can get hd movies for like 5 bucks
Is the 80GB PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility still being manufactured outside of the MGS4 bundle? I've been checking online retailers and they only seem to list the 40GB model.

No, the MGS4 bundle replaces the Motorstorm bundle.
They're the same price. However, Motorstorm bundles haven't been produced in ages, and you'll go through ten levels of hell trying to find one most likely.

Thing is. Porn also backed Blu-Ray. There was porn on both formats. So it didn't amount to much.

Yeah. I actually JUST bought the HD-DVD add on for the 360, came with King King, and bought Planet Earth, 300 and the Fountain. Grand total? $60.
And the best part?
Even though the format is dead - they all still play! In HD none-the-less!

So is there anyway to actually get this $100 taken off of the price of the PS3 cause honestly I almost never buy stuff at Walmart. I'd rather just have them take $100 off rather than have a gift card. What's the return policy on this? Can I say return the PS3 and rebuy it using the gift card?

Do the internet features still work?
Honest question.
Honest answer - I haven't tried yet. I've just watched a couple planet earth's so far, as I've been pretty busy. Hopefully this weekend I can get to the Fountain, and get you an answer.
But even if it doesn't - it was an amazing deal. The remote control that comes with it ALONE was worth the $30 the player cost. Nothing beats just watching videos off my computer through the XBox, not needing to get a controller out to do it.

does it come with a Windows Media Center remote, or a standard Xbox 360 remote?
Um - both maybe?
It's an XBox360 remote in the sense that up top it has eject, the 360 jewel and power. The jewel (is that what its still called?) can get to the sign in blades and stuff. It has buttons for A, B, X and Y. You can totally navagate the 360 dash like a controller.
It ALSO has, towards the bottom, a windows logo, that I suppose activates Windows Media Center. It has a couple windows specific buttons - but Im on a Mac running Connect360, so I havent touched them.
Its also a universal remote, as tapping the TV button once turns the LED's red, and they control your TV, instead of the XBox. So you can use the power button, ect...on the TV seperatley.
It seriously is awesome to be able to sit down, turn on the XBox, turn on the TV, check the marketplace, buy something, then go to the Media blade, watch something off my computer (or this weekend I used it to stream music at a party), and then shut it all down with just one remote.

Is the 80GB PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility still being manufactured outside of the MGS4 bundle? I've been checking online retailers and they only seem to list the 40GB model.
Wait, is the MGS4 PS3 bundle PS2 backward compatible?! Is it done via software or hardware? (I've been out of the loop for a while.)

it's a standard 80 gb PS3.
So it's the top of the line you can get (outside of the out-of-production 60 gb version). It comes with software PS2 BC, 4 USB ports (as opposed to 2 on the 40 gb) and card reader slots (for stuff like SD cards).

40GB PS3 is $400, and that's all that's available at the moment. The 80GB bundle with MGS4 comes out that week at $500.
Edit: And it's not a price drop. You have to pay full price, THEN you get the card with $100 on it to use on whatever.

This is convenient for Sony, to see what sort of effect a price drop would have without having to risk anything.

I never asked for this!
If I hadn't just bought this ridiculous monitor I'd definitely grab a PS3. Ah well, I can wait a little while!
By my calculations, buying a PS3 can wait for only 8 more days.

This brings the 40GB PS3 down to that level, since, let's face it, a Wal-Mart gift card is pretty much the same as cash.
Unfortunately, there was a similar deal on the 360 back last November, so I've already got an HD console. Ah well.
Because if I can, I am a raging moron for ordering one online that will take forever to get here.
Theoretically. However, I say don't hold your breath about being able to find MGS4 bundles come the 12th.
Nope.

(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)

Not that BB Giftcard is really any better than a Walmart one, but whatever.

Does.. does it fix the plot?
I think you'll be needing a hammer for that.
