Basically the research that was conducted shows that not only are people having considerably short play sessions and fewer play sessions a day, but are barely turning it on more than a 1/3rd of the time of the other consoles.
June 4, 2008 - A study recently conducted by consumer research group Nielsen found that younger gamers spend most of their time playing the Xbox 360, and older gamers while away the hours with the PlayStation 3. In both age groups, the Wii came in a distant second in total amount of play time received.
We can play arm chair statistician all day if we want, but Nielsen knows their shit. Personally I think this lends credence to the arguments about 3rd party concerns and the lack of immense software sales for the wii that aren't by companies not named nintendo.

I"m not surprised especially since most of the people with wiis either use it to complement their other consoles or are the ones who bought it because of how much fun they had with wii sports
Hmm. That was a pretty quiet time for wii in terms of releases though. Now that wii fit, mario kart and smash brothers have hit, I'd be interested to see if things have changed. Although mario galaxy was released in that period.
That said, wii just doesn't seem to have the sort of games that have you playing til 4am. Good for me, I suppose, since my aging body can't handle that anymore.
It's still awesome, it's just that the new TV I got hates SD signals and lags them out of rage. I need to get some component cables, but I'm broke. So I don't play my Wii much.
I'll admit it, I was playing Full Throttle via ScummVM
All is forgiven.
I remember Tim being asked what the difference between Ben from FT and Bernard from MM was. His reply:
Both of them are confronted with a locked door with the key in the lock on the other side. All they have is a ham sandwich with which to open it. Bernard would grease the floor with the mayo, slide the bread under the door, poke the key out onto the bread with the toothpick, slide it back and unlock the door.
Ben would kick down the door and eat the sandwich. It was at that moment that I knew Full Throttle would be one of my favourite games ever. I got my motorcycle and my M license because of FT.

I love my Wii (that's what...he said?), but I do consider it a compliment to my 360. A select group (read: Nintendo) of releases get worn the fuck out on it, yes, but beyond that I don't touch it much (god, the innuendo).
I wonder what does young gamer covers? 'cause I'm pretty surprised that the PS3 has an older target audience. I mean the UK has the oldest average gamer and is the epitome of 360 land, I wonder why that’s different in the US.

As soon I read the title I knew almost every post responding would be hilarious. To resist giving into it, oh jeez. SO much willpower.
Also, I dunno, for me there hasn't really been anything released since SSBB. Although, I do plan to pick up RE4: Wii. I've never played RE4 before so...
The raw data is more telling for me. "1/3 less uses per day" is meaningless without some context. 2.57 uses per day as opposed to 1.8 - so the average over 27 gamer uses their PS3 once more per day than the average wii owner. The most telling stat to me though is number of days where the console is used.
I wonder - had the wii included some of the PS3/360 style media centre features, would we be seeing a higher usage rate?
It's not a lack of anything - people were tricked when they bought their Wii consoles. Casual John and noob Jane saw the Wiimote and Wii Sports and started imagining all the great things that could possibly happen. 1:1 lightsaber duels. Perfect FPS controls. Online Smash Bros. and Pokemon tournaments.
All that imagination made them want a Wii but the console hasn't yet kicked into high gear and they're getting tired of waiting. The Wii lacking in the same genres as the Gamecube did in its prime isn't helping.
The actual stats don't look particularly worrisome (or encouraging, depending on your point of view). Couple minutes less here and there, eh.
In the past four or five weeks, I've taken my Wii to a friends house and probably played 10+ hours each weekend in Mario Kart, Brawl and Dr. Mario. That doesn't count the weekdays that I've been playing Boom Blox, Mario Kart and various Wiiware. And I just got WiiFit.
I'm sure there are people who hate all of those games and only use the Wii to play River City Ransom or something.
My Wii will see more use soon: I picked up Wii Fit online today - it should be here next week.
Hey, it's me, so no one will be surprised, but I was right on the money for my own usage: This is a Nintendo Machine, playable only for Nintendo games. I bought my Mario, my Zelda, my Metroid (is a girl?). The added bonus of Wii Sports was good for a while, but got dry quick. Hopefully Wii Fit will hold my interest like Nike+ has on my iPod.

I agree with this. My Wii is the nintendo machine, with my PS3 and Xbox 360 splitting the bulk of my time.
The next wii game I can see me putting a lot of time into is Sonic Unleashed.
I will be getting all 4 versions.
You know you are insane right? As long as you're aware of it. I mean, it's an awesome sort of insane, but insane nonetheless.
I've bought and beaten Sonic '06 twice. Once on the 360, and once on the PS3.

I use my 360 a ton, a good deal more than my Wii, but most of the time it's for something that's not related to gaming at all. The media functions are very useful.
For gaming, I use my Wii more often. If I could afford to buy every game I wanted (and had the time to play them all) I imagine I'd play my 360 a bit more than my Wii, but not significantly so.
I think the key to keeping a healthy wii is to have friends to play it with, while having another game that's sort of a solidary - break from the norm expierence.
I rock Smash Bros. with my friends,
And when I want to take a break from my current Oblivion or Puzzle Quest kick, I pop in my recently aquired Power Pros on the wii, and have a blast for a couple of hours.

Does this mean science is broken?
No. You're an abomination.
I just think it's sort of funny

But as soon as I get back from vacation next week I'm renting Zelda to install ScummVM too!
I definately throw off the numbers though - I'm exclusively a Nintendo gamer right now (DS/Wii) except for my Atari 2600.
I've turned it on since then, however, to update and to try out the DS demo thingy.
haha, I just checked mine and it's the same deal.
However, my PS3 is eternally covered in dust, and I pretty much constantly use it. I blame their damn dust-attracting finishes.
This stopped being funny five minutes after the name was announced
Cut it the fuck out

That's why I apologized, I know I'm horrible.

wait, 4? I thought that the PS3/360 versions were the same, with DS and Wii being different?
There's a 4th?

PS3, 360, Wii, and PS2.
Sorry to further derail, but is there a major difference between the PS3 and 360 versions?
You know you are insane right? As long as you're aware of it. I mean, it's an awesome sort of insane, but insane nonetheless.
nope.
This, somehow, is also my alibi.
Orb and Flash games, I guess.
