Jack Thompson walks out on hearing, judge recommends lifetime disbarment.

Link to the story.

What strikes me as particularly insane is that he continues to ad-hom the judge and the Bar even when facing a 10-year disbarment. The man seems to live in some fantasy world where he's the most important person and everything he does should be treated like gold.

    Uhh...
Before walking out of the courtroom, Thompson filed what he called "Thompson's Formal Objection to June 4 Sanctions hearing. In the documented, 4,500-word objection, Thompson questioned Tunis' ability to sit on his hearing, calling her incompetent and arrogant and threatening to have her removed from office "in the days and weeks ahead." He also went on to call the people run The Florida Bar fascists and denied that he was involved some sort of "petty culture war."

This is why they shouldn't let insane hobos become lawyers. Do you see what happens Florida Bar?

Is "enhanced disbarment" anything like "enhanced interrogation?"

A poster on /. claiming to be a lawyer (his user ID was <2000, so he must be trustworthy ) said that disbarment is permanent, but that disbarred attorneys can request that it be lifted after five years in most jurisdictions. So it seems Thompson would be getting a much harsher punishment (ten years). The best part that the poster said is
By its nature, disbarment is permanent. In many (most?) states, an attorney can petition to be considered for lifting of disbarment after five years--but has a heavy burden; he must show that he is no longer a danger if allowed to practice. The fact that he is a danger was established prior to disbarment; disputing it would end the possibility of showing the needed change.

Ten years, however . . . and that does *not* mean he gets the license back then, only that that is the earliest date at which he *could* request it and attempt to show fitness . . .

If the bolded part is accurate, Thompson would have to not act like he is batshit insane for ten years in order to have his license to practice law reinstated.

Honestly, I think it would be pretty funny to see him quieten down for ten whole years and turn completely sane, only to revert back to craziness the minute his license is reinstated.

It would say a lot about the profession.

He'll still probably appear on "news" shows as an self-proclaimed expert, so this really does very little beyond ensuring he won't muck with things legally. Even permanent disbarment would mean squat if he's still being given a place to speak to the general public.

PS, you can be disbarred in one jurisdiction and still practice law anywhere else that you've passed the bar, and I imagine that Jack's passed the bar in a ton of regions. Granted, disbarment in one region is grounds for disbarment in others, but it's not compulsory at all.

So this is just retarded and still not fucking news.

Oh, he could have done the sane thing and downplayed the Florida disbarment effort, Aroduc. (Though I'm not sure if he's a member of the bar in other states, and his main practice is/was in Florida). But he didn't. Oh boy, he did not. He made this hearing into news. On purpose, I guess, but it has backfired because of his statement.

You guys must read that submitted statement (in the OP's link). It is amazing. It sums up everything you need to know about Jack Thompson, in his own words. This is a man who is so full of himself he believes he is a martyr, and everyone who disagrees with him is evil/immoral/stupid/a fraud/acting illegally/part of a cabal out to persecute him. The spin he puts on his history and the facts of his case is unbelievable.

In it, among many other crazy statements, he repeatedly makes the claim that the judge hearing his case and six of the seven members of the Florida Supreme Court are not legally judges. He uses as a metaphor the death of his case's judge by drowning -- by Thompson's hanging a weight around her neck.

He compares the judge and the Florida Bar to, among other things, a worm, a lynch mob, the Star Chamber, fascists, Stalin, and the Nazis -- several times. He compares himself to a rapist, a persecuted Christian, a Holocaust victim, and Paul Revere. Oh, and he compares himself to Jesus -- twice.

It is news, for us anyway, after all the history. Besides, if we can't use the internet to gossip about people we hate then what the hell is the point of it?

So far as the Bar goes in England/Wales/NZ we have a "fit and proper" test - which can mean nearly anything the local Law Society wants it to, and they would quite likely deny someone disbarred in another, similar jurisdiction if they applied

Part of me always gets some perverse pleasure when hearing about JT's latest escapade. But increasingly, I find myself filled with a sort of sadness, and guilt. It's like standing by and watching a man drown in a foot of water. The more he struggles, the more danger he seems to put himself in. And I know he needs help, someone has to step forward and try to help him.

But how do you teach a man to simply stand up?
