Ancient Multiplayer Games

I'm thinking of setting up a LAN with my friends, as I generally do every year, and lately I've been putting in themes to the LANs, seeing as I honestly find having a few rabid idiots forcing everyone to play Halo and BF2 over and over again fucking irritating.

In any case, something I tentatively have in mind is the idea of an old school DOS era multiplayer LAN (*maybe* Win95 era) The thing is I have a pretty short list of games that would work.

Just so you know, you don't have to question me about the logistics, I have pretty much all the ancient hardware I need.

Possible games I have in mind so far are:
DooM
VGA Planets 3.1
Railroad Tycoon 2
Civ 1/2
Worms
Master of Orion 2

PS Mind you, I'm not entirely sure, aside from Doom, MoO2 and VGAP which of these have proper multiplayer modes.

So, any other DOS-era MP games? The older the better!

EDIT: Multiplayer being defined here as requiring an Ethernet connection of some kind between two or more computers, not on the same keyboard. Otherwise I'd be putting SF2 on the list or something.

How old are we talking here? Tribes is free, and fantastic multiplayer action. Plus, it has software rendering as an option.

Civ1 had a multiplayer version for windows called "winciv" or some crap.

Civ 2 had multiplayer from the start.

You can a get an opensource clone of Civ2 called "freeciv" for well.. free.. has multiplayer.

Warcraft 2? I'm talking about the original version, not the Battle.net one. Though, the latter is probably way easier to find.

Only thing I can think of that fits really well are FPS games.

You already have Doom. Between Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and the millions of campaigns, maps, mods, 3d modes and addons, I could enjoy a weekend long LAN of nothing *but* Doom, but maybe that's just me.

If you want to advance a little further, Quake is still excellent. If you want some team gaming, try a CTF mod or, better yet, Team Fortress!

I'll go one generation of Quake further, to Quake II, for the simple fact that it has Action Quake 2. Countless hours were lost upon that game.

Oh, old-school iD, how I miss thee!

Also War II, Quake, MoO II, and many others mentioned here.

Diablo 1 and X Wing vs Tie Fighter if you're willing to pop into early Win 95.

    Fresh Meat!

Perhaps a bit late Win-95, but Alpha Centauri can be great fun. Spaceward Ho! 4.0 is also quite fun, and a good bit of ally-dickery can be had. ("Oh please mr. ally, may I have 10,000 metal to build a fleet to defend myself with?" Ten turns later 'mr ally' losses his home planet so suddenly to a fleet of your dreadnaughts he doesn't even get a battle report beyond "Uhm, we died..")

The old Command and Conquers as well.

I actually have MechWarrior 2 and XvT, but they generally need joystick support, which might be a bit of a stretch.
And yeah, I'm generally going for pre-95, but I may reconsider, especially if said game is DOS-based anyway

EDIT: Does C&C run in DOS mode? What about Red Alert?

Browsing MobyGames, these are games I can actually vouch for. All of these were awesome at the time at least.

    Racing:

    Hi-Octane
Slipstream 5000, might suck without a good joystick, not sure.

    Strategy:

    Settlers 1&2
Rampart is a whole lotta fun but I'm not sure if it supported network play.

Other than that it's basically a bunch of flight sims and sports games.

Some have been mentioned but here's my list:

Dungeon Keeper 2 works well multiplayer, DK1 is a bit of a fucker to get running nowadays:

    Rise of the triad
    Doom
    Fatal Racing
    Populous 3
    Carmageddon
    Monster Truck Madness
Worms doesn't have TCP/IP play I don't think, just hot seat. Worms 2 does iirc
    Command and Conquer
    Quake
    Quarantine
I agree with the Screamer games, but I'd include Screamer 2 as well, I have a soft spot for it
    Hexen/Heretic
    Did Abuse have multiplayer?
    Syndicate Wars
    Magic Carpet 1 and 2

When I was in college it always alternated between Quake, and Whiplash (aka Fatal Racing).

Most everyone knows about Quake so I won't talk about it.

Fatal Racing was a crazy high speed stunt racing game...each track had some feature that made it absolutely brutal.

You can still find the demo, which works for up to 8 people I think, and has one track. The track features a twisted ramp that makes you DO A BARREL ROLL in midair, and if you don't leave the ramp at the proper speed you either crash into the pit below the ramp, or land upside down on the other side.

The cars take damage as they're rammed into things, and over the course of a race if you don't bring your car into the pits for repairs, they'll gradually get slower and slower, start smoking, start flaming, and ultimately explode in a gratifying ball of flame...for which the last person to damage you gets credit!

I wish beyond I don't know what that I still had my full copy, but my brother lost it. Family sucks sometimes.

Oh, extra bonus: If you can get your hands on a retail copy, I think you can have up to 16 players on a LAN with only the host requiring a CD. Everyone else just needs to have it installed.

Moby has some screenshots here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/whiplash/screenshots
