FF3 brings closure and completeness to the original trilogy. I loved how they connected all the games together through FF3. It's definitely a must play if you've played FF1 and FF2.
You know. I have always wanted to play a Fatal Frame. But I never have, because I am a GIANT PUSSY when it comes to ghosts. This has been a good choice, I can see, since even just that one picture creeps me out.
You know, it's funny. My wife hates games in general. Doesn't get too into Wii Sports, didn't enjoy random party games, thinks anything with anything resembling a story is a complete waste of time. The woman doens't even like MARIO for fucks sake.

Until Fatal Frame 3, I thought if they'd quit dressing the heroines in skin-tight miniskirts, maybe they could run faster. Then FF3's heroine actually wore pants but still couldn't run, so maybe it's a common genetic defect in paranormally-sensitive Japanese women or something.

And she's interested in this game.
Out of curiosity, has she ever been exposed to Silent Hill 3, specifically? I wonder if it would also appeal.
My theory is that:
Horror game + lone, vulnerable, but brave female protagonist + cute but not slutty/decidedly feminine, but sensible look has a fairly broad empathetic appeal.

Wimmen loves them some mystery. Shit, that's why I played FF1.
I'm kind of surprised people aren't noting the graphics more... they're pretty good for a Wii game. Good to see some third party effort on that front.
Check out the difference in quality between the character models and lighting in these two shots:
Looks like the prettier shots are pre-rendered. The first shot doesn't look bad, but it's not particularly impressive when compared to, say, RE4. I'll wait until we have some in-game footage to really critique the graphics.
Shit, they did it before the Grudge did, at least in America.
If I'm not mistaken, it's something of a staple in horror mythology in Japan. I believe it has several symbolic meanings, but there's a reason it keeps coming up. We just haven't seen it much before, so instead of being a well established archetype, it's just "olol more Ring/Grudge black haired chick ghost stuff".
The appearance of an onryō
Traditionally, onryō and other yurei had no particular appearance. However, with the rising of popularity of Kabuki during the Edo period, a specific costume was developed.
Highly visual in nature, and with a single actor often assuming various roles within a play, Kabuki developed several visual shorthands that allowed the audience to instantly clue in as to which character is on stage, as well as emphasize the emotions and expressions of the actor.
A ghost costume consisted of three main elements:
White burial kimono Wild, unkempt long black hair
White and indigo face make-up called aiguma.
Emphasis mine.

Fatal Frame has typically not done its cutscenes in the gameplay engine. It still looks not quite pre-rendered when you're actually seeing it live on your screen, so I think it's a case of having a separate cinematic engine and character models. I've never noticed compression artifacts, but I suppose it could still be video purposefully close enough to the gameplay visuals so as to "blur the line".
No they aren't. There is bigger pictures going around, and you can clearly see 16-bit dithering on them. Furthermore, character model isn't really so smooth as it appears on the small screen.

Just because there's dithering on the shots doesn't mean they're in-game. Obvious aliasing or visible polygons would be a better indicator.
Link to the bigger shots?

Just look at the Fatal Frame 2 shot, that's from a cinematic. Those bodies are pretty polygonal, but the girl has much higher detail. Yet there's still some aliasing along the edges of her robe. If it was pure pre-rendered video there'd be no reason for this.
Obviously Wii has a new/ported engine, but they really seem to be sticking with tradition here. It's not as if the FF4 scenes look better than RE4's, which the Gamecube and Wii did entirely in real time.
Clear aliasing along the shirt collar's left edge, on the camera's "accordion" bits, and visible polygons on structure of the lens.
Each game has had a pre-rendered intro and end, and I'm sure some of the shots are from it, but I've always been quite certain the cutscenes are done in a higher-detail cinematic engine or were purposely kept close to the gameplay visuals as they're not quite typical "CG movie" quality.

Yes, that particular shot is clearly in-game, or from a real-time cutscene. That particular shot isn't really impressive, either.
But this shot, for example, (and the one I mentioned earlier) aren't real-time:

No, I think it's just that we're both into atmospheric ghostly horror, and there isn'tr\ a whole lot of that. Most American horror movies are more of the slasher variety these days, and the gore-porn doesn't really do it for us.
I think she'll probably watch while I play for a while and see how she likes it. I'm hoping that when it's (hopefully) infinitely better than some of the shitty horror movies we've watched maybe it'll broaden her mind a bit about the possibilites of gaming in general. Shit, I will offer a sloppy blow job to anyone who can make a game that has that effect. Not from me though. From a hooker.
Also, honky is an asshole. Apparently. Kinda surprising.

In the beginning it spent a lot of time not be creepy at all. And Fatal Frame minus the creepy is, well, not very good.
edit. the ropes. the ropes.
Oh, I definitely don't think it's as good as CB, but it certainly has its moments. There was one in the darkroom that made me die on the inside.
God yes. The vision at the beginning of FF2 is sooooo fucked up.

They really only look a step or two better than the PS2 versions. Not saying that's a bad thing as those were good looking games.

Which isn't a bad thing, it's good to have a tough time telling between pre-rendered and realtime.
I hope travis touchdown is mentioned in the game...
You know, you seem awfully fixated on Touchdown...
Also, this will be my first Fatal Frame and it is so bought'd.
Probably my favorite main character in a video game since... Well... Since ever. He was the embodiment of me. And I love me.
