Student Loans and Studying Abroad

I'm going to be studying abroad in Tokyo (Sophia University) for a year starting this August. Not being very wealthy, I get a decent amount of money through federal and state grants and subsidized loans. However, those alone are not going to be enough to cover all my expenses. I know next to nothing about taking out private loans, so I'm looking for some general advice on what I should do.

The program (EAP through the UC system) estimates the cost for the whole year abroad including tuition, housing, food, transportation, etc. at about $30,000. The difference between that amount and my financial aid awards is probably going to be at least $15,000.

Some information that may be relevant is that I'm 19, currently a freshman at UCSD, and have built a little bit of credit history (I have been using a credit card for the last year and making all the monthly payments). Having a co-signer might be difficult since my parents have pretty bad credit.

Any other general advice on living in Japan is welcome too.

Thanks.
