Have a hard drive problem; any help?

Hey guys,

I have a problem related to hard drives and Windows.

Here's the scenario:

My friend has a PC, a really old one, full of issues. He asked me to make some minor upgrades and to "make it faster," but he wanted to keep "everything the same."

I figured the best way to do this without risk of losing data was to:

buy more ram, and a second HDD.

I installed the RAM, and made the second HDD the master and the first HDD the slave.

When WinXP was installing, it only recognized 130 of 160 gigs of the new HDD. Fine, I said, he won't even use probably 30 gigs total anyway.

So I installed WinXP and all his old software, and brought over his data and settings from his old Win2000 hdd. However, there was a serious problem with some hardware and WinXP, and we decided it would only work on Win2000.

But he had 1 gig of stuff I brought over from the old HDD that he added to. So it was new data. But it was a gig in size.

So what I did (stupidly) was use Norton Partition Magic 8 to create a new partition on the large HDD for the unused 30 gigs, I created it FAT32. Then I copy and pasted all of his new 1+ gigs of "new" data onto it.

I proceeded to use the Win2k cd to delete the main partition , recreate and reformat it, leaving the Partition Magic 30 gig partition intact.

When I got win2k back up and running on the newly made/formatted Partition, I tried loading the "new" data from the Partition Magic created 30 gig partition.

The new Win2k install WILL NOT READ THE DATA from the partition.

It can see the drive and partition and proper size, but it cannot read the data. I thinks some subfolders I made are "files" of some kind. It won't read some install exe files. Outlook wont load the backed up mailbox files, says they are empty or something. Just all of the files on there, either the system doesn't know what they are or can't use them, even though they were perfectly fine when I was running winXp on this same partition..

Is there anything I can do or any way I can get windows, of any form, and/or using Norton Partition Magic, to get those files onto the Win2k system and have it read them properly?

Anybody know wtf just happened? What can I do?

Thanks everyone
