DirectX 10 on Windows XP?

4rch3nemy4rch3nemy Registered User regular
A little bit of Googlin' led me to this: http://www.techmixer.com/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/ and if you read the comments you get mixed reactions of how it doesn't work and how it's the best thing since sliced bread. Any words here?

I'd try this myself but I don't know how easy it is to roll back to DX9 after installing this. Plus I have a fresh install of XP that I just don't want to fuck up.

First of all, this picture is a fucking lie. Secondly - IMOm, quality enhancement through DirectX 10 are negligible in most cases (+ they come at the cost of performance). I wouldn't recommend crippling your system with an unofficial version of DirectX.

Didn't Flight Sim X comes out... like two or three years ago?

Somehow I doubt it even took advantage of Direct X10.

It'll never work for the simple reason that the drivers nvidia, ATI etc provide for windows xp doesn't include anything DX10 related.

Also, yes. The above two pictures are faker than any porn actresses boobs.

So, yes.. whilst you could hack up the DX10 DLL's to work on some level for XP no DX10 games would work because the driver support for DX10 on XP isn't there.

DX10 is tomorrow's technology. I don't think we've seen any solid use yet.

this is more realistic as far as the difference between DX9 and DX10.

Not worth any level of shenanigans. If you're running vista and have a DX10 card anyway, it's slightly better...

Bad article to link to as they basically say at the bottom they fucked up and aren't comparing Dx9 to Dx10 but a mixed mode to pure Dx10. You have to go to the follow up story to get the real comparisons http://firingsquad.com/hardware/bioshock_mainstream_gpu_performance/page6.asp

They added it in a service pack. It doesn't look like the picture, though.

Crysis would be the best comparsiom, although there isn't a rig out there that can run that game fully maxed at a decent FPS. Kinda sad really, the differences aren't as black and white as they are in that fake Flight Sim game, but there are some noticable differences

That DX10 picture is always listed as *Artistic rendering

unless some idiot copies it to his blog without that little caption. AFAIK, DX10 really is just a means for people to do extra super things like super fine shadows and phsyics and silly stuff like that. ATM DX10, vs DX9 really, it's nothing night and day, the DX10 mechanics are still being experimented with by game devs.

At this point in time, DX10 is very much not needed. It is a system hog for minimum results. I'm sure in a year or two, it will rock ass though.

I'm more excited about the next version of OpenGL. That will probably get XP support.
