I know alot of you PA'ers are from the Seattle area. My wife and I are looking at areas to move to here in the next couple of years and the Seattle are is on our list. We dont want to live in Seattle but rather in one of the outlying cities. What are some good cites around there? I have a daughter who will be 4 by the time we move up there so Im looking for a place with a good school system/low crime. My wife is a nurse and will be working as a police officer so preferably a city with good jobs in those fields or within a short commute. We will be buying a house and can afford probably up to about 400k.
I would suggest looking to the North of Seattle. There are actually a lot of nice suburbs to the north. Good jobs are there, a LOT of good jobs are going to be found in Bellevue, just outside of Seattle to the east. There is Mukilteo, Lynnwood, Everett. There are a bunch more but that will give you an idea of the area. I would stay away from just about anything to the south of Seattle. Tacoma & Renton are pretty horrible (IMO)

Kent/Covington have good schools, and are kinda in between Tacoma and Seattle geographically. Little further out than the other suggestions, but worth considering.

Is your wife switching careers from a nurse to a officer, or are you working as an officer?
It's certainly not like living in the city, but it's close enough to seem like it.
Of course, you could move to Seattle proper--we have an excellent school system and low crime anyways.
