The next Call of Duty is subtitled World at War and developed by Treyarch.

It will feature co-op for the first time in the series and is heading to PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, according to the first details - spilled from the pages of GamesTM magazine and read by VG247.

The Nintendo version will be handled by a separate developer, we're told, but all will be built on the Call of Duty 4 engine.

Call of Duty: World at War is set back in World War II amid the Pacific struggle between the US and Japan.

Content is said to be as gritty and mature as any game around. Apparently the opening shows a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat and turning to dish out a similar fate to you. Is that gritty and mature enough for you? Is it?

There's no word on a date just yet, but word comes off the back of Call of Duty 4 managing to sell over 10 million copies and retake the top-spot of most-played game on Xbox Live from Grand Theft Auto IV.

Look out for our thoughts on Call of Duty: World at War in the nearish future.

    Pacific region? Gritty and mature?

    Really?

After how good and understandably successful CoD4 was, I just can't see this being anything other than a poorly-handled cash-in. I also wonder how much it pisses off Infinity Ward to have their franchise abused like this.

I imagine they're pretty happy, they have more time to make the 6th game, otherwise Activision would probably force them to release one each year..

Well that's my problem. Give Infinity Ward the 2 years (or more) that they need to make their top-quality sequels, and stop watering down the brand by getting someone else in to keep the schedule ticking over, just for the sake of having a new Call of Duty on shelves every year. It's a real waste.

Can we also redden "seemingly?" We don't seem to be fans of reading the text we're getting upset about.

Being on the bad end of guerrilla warfare sounds like a pretty neat idea with tons of potential. If only I trusted Treyarch.

When they say "alien" fighting force I don't think they mean aliens.

In fact I am absolutely sure they mean unfamiliar. The Japanese did fight in a much different way than others what with the kamikaze and basically not letting themselves be taken prisoner.

But I am not looking forward to this game at all.

Also, who made Big Red One? Good lord was that the most god awful game I have ever played.

I think most people get that...(the alien thing that is)

Though talks of Call of Duty: Terminator Edition and Call of Duty: Hellboy Edition...may me dream of how awesome that would be.

What if your squad had to fight again like a T-1000 and he was cutting down your squad left and right...you'd be the only one left standing while being hunted...okay I have to stop now.

    Carry on.

The details given already sound so absurd I honestly wonder if it's some sort of joke. ET's or not it sounds completely fucking stupid.

I don't think the general public is going to care if IW is the publisher. However, the general public IS going to care that it's in WWII again. And they won't buy it.

I've had this idea kicking around in my head for some time where everything is presented as being strictly generic world war 2 shooter and then right after the first level you get sent on a secret mission to retrieve a "foo fighter" that crashed in enemy territory and the rest of the game is you fighting Nazis who are trying to get the alien technology and the stranded aliens who are fighting to survive and you get crazy retro-futuristic ray guns and shit

It would be so fucking awesome

Although I must admit, the idea of Call of Duty 2142 developed by Infinity Ward makes me excited in ways that I thought only a woman could

    A. If Infinity ward makes a futuristic shooter, it has to be starcraft based. Activision-Blizzard, anyone?

    B. Maybe CoD5 will be based on the black dragon secret bio-warfare group, trying to spread solanum to the west.

GOD DAMMIT NO! WHY, ACTIVISION, WHY?!

Ugh. Treyarch sucks. Call of Duty 3 was horrendous. Infinity Ward doesn't even acknowledge 3 exists. Hell, they wanted to make the third game, but as a modern warfare game. Activision wanted more WW2 games, and so they set Treyarch to develop it. Bad decision.

The series is Infinity Ward's baby. They shouldn't keep sullying the name of the series by letting Treyarch develop it. And back to WW2? Double ugh!

But seriously, what else can Call of Duty do? WWII and Modern warfare are really the only times you can go full on with that FPS realism.

Battlefield tried vietnam and the future, but i hear those didnt go so well.

As long as they have good single player, it'll be at least worth a rent.

CoD4's multiplayer can be totally written off. Yay, everyone just fucking sprints around the map and every time I die there's a sniper scope in the deathcam.

    campaign was spectacular, though.

also it'd be nice if they followed IW's lead and made all the achievements single player.

I love multiplayer to death, but this is very true. I think CoD4 multi has the same appeal as Counter-Strike, and that's an acquired taste.

But yeah, the single player is going to be hard to top. My socks were blown clean off more than once.

    What?

I usually play hardcore mode in servers with less than 10 people. It gets pretty tense, and really fun. Very quiet ...

I think FFA with 4-6 people is pretty much the most tense thing ever, though ...

Some servers are like what you described, and I hate that. The great thing about CoD4 MP is that there are a ton of options/game types/etc ... there has to be something you enjoy.

Most of the Call of Duty 4 servers Ive found is just a giant clusterfuck of people shotguns. Although I did find a nice hardcore server (Snicker, etc.) that had a good set of players. A variety of tatics and weapons being used, and so on. It feels a lot less cheap to be killed going head to head with a Submachine gunner than a sniper on the other side of the map.

    Anyways:

Call of Duty 6: Oh God Canada is Invading.

Canada lands on the beaches of the British Isles, your some random bloke who's with Captian Price of the 128th Badass Weapons division, which includes fixed gauss gun emplacements, Railguns, and what not.

And there will be a scene where Price Lodges a giant British flag that is several times larger than a average tank into the corpse of a Canadian armored Polar Bear. With your standard "Huzzah! Were Awesome!" Triumphant Classical Music blaring in the background.

Likewise the Canadian Campaign: Roll off into a random beach somewhere that has Irish, and kill a whole bunch of things on your armored dog sled.

So yeah, more awesome single player in settings thats not what they have already done.

I think we all agree that having yearly sequels is a bad thing, but at the end of the day, people are still buying it so Activision is going to keep making it. Look at the GH franchise, we are only seeing the beginning of the milking of that franchise. Don't be surprised in a few years from now we see a new GH game every 3-4 months.

Activision's success has always been milking franchises to the fullest extent unless something proves otherwise. ie Tony Hawk

I'll definitely give CoD 5 a chance if only because they are building off of CoD 4 so they really shouldn't have any trouble emulating the best aspects of CoD 4.
