I appreciate the stance in marking spoilers, but I was really hoping for a completely spoiler-free MGS4 thread.

This has been a recurring thing. A few people have asked for it. But nobody has answered this: what the fuck would we talk about in there?

Our hopes, fears, and speculations for the game perhaps, without any knowledge of what's been leaked so far?

Of course such a thread would prove useless after the next 2-3 days, but still, as a safe haven for forum members avoiding all info up to release day, it couldn't hurt.

I sure hope this game rules!

    I'm afraid of it sucking.

You guys think it will rule? I think it will rule.

So I finished my no kill/alerts/guns run of MGS3. It was fun. I just killed myself and continued if I ever got caught, so it said I had alerts, but it also said I had 23 kills. ???

Anything you do before getting killed counts. If you get an alert, kill a guy, use a life medicine or special item, or whatever, and then deliberately die and continue, the game still counts the alert or kill or whatever towards your total at the end of the game. This applies to any of the MGS games, as far as I know. Unsurprisingly, the fake death pill doesn't count as a kill - I've seen a speedrun video where the guy uses the fake death pill to ambush The Fear and still ends up with the Foxhound ranking.

On the plus side, in MGS2, if you get a dog tag, get killed, and continue, you get to keep the dog tag. Kerotans and collectible food items probably work the same way in MGS3, but I'd never chance it.

Wait, ZotE and Metal Gear are the same universe?

Not really. It kind of looks like Policenauts and Snatcher were originally supposed to both be in the same timeline as the Metal Gear games, back before MGS1 came out, but the MGS timeline has contradicted both games' back stories plenty of times since then. (For starters, Policenauts starts a year before MGS4 occurs despite featuring the same characters in a different setting, and a different guy invents the Metal Gear Mk. II in Snatcher.) The references between Kojima's various series are just Easter eggs at this point.

Oh well that kinda sucks. Been doing a no alert run myself and have gotten caught a few times and fake death'd/continued. Well not too concerned about getting the stealth camo just doing it for fun anyways. Still kind of anoying.

MGS3 is most fun when you don't use stealth. I kill everyone. The sniper rifle is so fun in MGS3.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Just fake death and continue right when it starts and go on. Especially useful if it's a second playthrough because you probably already have the camo for going through the whole thing.

All the things we were talking about before the spoilers started cropping up?

The original thread was made as not just an MGS4 thread, but a general Metal Gear thread (hence, at the top of the old thread it said "Warning! Metal Gear Spoilers Ahead"). The original intention was for it to be somewhere where Metal Gear fans could talk about the old games without needing spoiler tags, as well as how excited we are for MGS4.

EDIT: No one cared then either, that there were actually three Metal Gear threads going on at once.

So I'm also doing a no kills/alerts play through of MGS3, and I thought it was all going okay. I just did the sorrow "fight", and it looked like there was one normal guard guy before the rest of the cobras appeared. Is he always there, or did I accidentally kill someone?

Yeah I know that now. I didn't mind though. It was just punishment. A shitload of them had bloody necks since I never worked out how to not slit throats until quite far into the game. ;)

I've already been infracted once in the last thread over this subject, but I have to respond.

We had some 70+ pages worth of conversation that DIDN'T involve spoilers related to the leaked copies of the game, so we obviously had stuff to talk about. Speculation is fun, it's why I came to this thread all the time. Not trying to be a smartass, but I can guarantee you it wasn't 70+ pages of "Gee, I like Metal Gear."

    RTFM? :)

Well, I don't remember all of it off the top of my head, but it had to be a CQC-enabled weapon, of which there weren't too many. In MGS4, CQC is...

    Spoilered :P
Available with EVERY weapon, if memory serves.

MAJOR MGS4 SPOILERS CONCERNING (A) THE PATRIOTS' IDENTITY, (B) OCELOT. BASICALLY I RUIN A BUNCH OF IMPORTANT PLOT POINTS IN HERE, SO DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU'RE CERTAIN.
Para-medic and Sigint? Patriots? Really, Kojima? Really? The same bunch that debated the effect that bioluminscent mushrooms had on your radar batteries become part of an insidious, all-powerful, all-controlling group? You couldn't have picked someone vaguely plausible?

Ocelot - The guy deliberately let Gray Fox into Shadow Moses so that Fox could chop off Ocelot's arm so that Ocelot could glue Liquid's arm onto his body so that he could pretend he was possessed by Liquid's ghost so that he could fool Snake into thinking voodoo crap like that was possible. I just... ugh.

    It's like a bad fanfiction.

Tapping Circle in front of the enemy will perform a basic punch combo, use this to
    knock them down and out.

If you hold circle when facing an enemy you grab them from the front. Your two options from the front are throw (move analog stick in a direction and press O again), or press O when not moving the analog to pull them forward and grab them from behind.

If you hold Circle when behind them you will grab the enemy from
behind. Once you have done this you can perform the following.
    • Push a direction on the analog stick and Circle to throw them to the ground.
    • Hold down Circle lightly and press L3 to interrogate them.
    • While still holding them press Square to pull out your gun and use him as a
      human shield.
    • Press Circle hard again to slice his throat.
    • Tap circle rapidly to choke them out without killing. (stop when you see stars)

I think thats all of them... I'm sure I missed something, but thats the important stuff.

Here's how CQC works, for those that need a refresher course:

    1) Get close to enemy. Sneaking is not a necessity.
    2) Hold down Circle.
    3) Slit their fucking throat.

It'll be awesome to see what Ocelot was up to during those days. Also, the fact that Big Boss apparently appears in cutscenes supervising the creation of Outer Heaven suggests Ocelot was involved somehow.

Really hope this turns out to be true. I know Kojima wanted to make more PSP games after his son, who doesn't like Metal Gear games, loved Portable Ops.
