Finally! the biggest Apple rumor of this year has come to an end taking the shape of reality...
It includes a built-in GPS, dramatically improved audio, solid metal buttons, insanely long battery life, normal headphone jack, and web browsing is 36% faster than any other 3G phone.
The shitty part is the iPhone plan is gone for the new phones. So now you pay $10 more a month for unlimited data and then have to pay additional for text messaging. So yeah, you might pay less upfront now but you pay more over time. (This is because at&t and apple aren't doing their profit sharing agreement, at&t now subsidizes part of the cost and makes it back in monthly charges.)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

So it basically uses the same business model as many cellphones now? Do I need to get a plan when I get an iPhone?

yeah, i think engadget said you can no longer order them online and activate at home. you must go to the store and activate there.
From what i've heard you have to activate the phone when you buy it, no getting around the 2 year subscription thing by simply unlocking it and using another carrier.
You get locked into the contract.
Apparently AT&T are buying the phones outright from Apple, which means higher charges for things like phone calls etc.
No idea what it means for us over in the UK though.

The cancellation fee on an AT&T contract is 175$, minus 5$ for every month you've had the contract. 370 for a 3g iPhone if you don't want AT&T service with it, as I'm guessing you can just cancel the service after the first month, pay the cancellation fee, and keep your new iPhone.
This could be... interesting to me. I don't really like verizon that much, not enough to have loyalty or anything. I should be coming up on the end of my contract, and I do need a new phone(spent $230 on my old phone, just a decent razor clone, full retail price though).

What other US carrier has a UMTS, aka 3G, network though?
The only other one I know of is T-Mobile but they're using a different frequency (1700/2100, as opposed to 800/1900 for AT&T).
You can't just tune in to another frequency like on a radio.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
What? That totally sours the deal.
