Video Game Sales Thread: Why so Serious? (About Numbers)

Xenogears of BoreXenogears of Bore Registered User regular
edited July 2008 in Games and Technology
WHO?

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.

WHAT?

United States Software and Hardware sales figures collected by NPD.

WHERE?

Right here. (and NeoGAF until it crashes from all the F5F5F5F5F5F5F5F5F5F5)

WHEN?

NPD for May will be released tonight at around 6:30 Eastern Standard Time.

WHY?

E-Dick measuring between fanboys and a good indicator of general video game health in the states. Also to win fabulous* prizes!

HOW?

This story is actually pretty funny. NPDs (The whole damn report) used to be leaked at NeoGAF and a few other sites for this dick measuring. However NPD makes money by selling this data and they were not pleased, as it is rather difficult to get people to buy the cow when the milk is free. So a deal was struck. NeoGAF would get the hardware numbers and the top ten software titles as long as they banned anyone who leaked the rest of the list.

CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG!

Wait no longer.

ANY MORE QUESTIONS?

Sure.

Will the Wii Burn with the power of a million suns?

Will the stimulus checks and residual GTA IV propel the Triple and 360 over last months dissapointment?

Just how pronounced are the Wii Fit/Mario Kart Wii Shortages?

Will the Wii pass the US XBOX 360 total sales mark thereby becoming supreme overlord of all three regions and possibly a Highlander? (All signs point to probably.)

Will someone craft a song worthy of this thread?

Will the DS print more worthless greenbacks or will it switch over to Sterling or Euros???

Whose Cuisine Will Reign Supreme?

*Maybe. Fabulousness not guaranteed.

Even better than having it in the OP.

Vidcons are so niche, but so very well done. The creator really understands the sillyness and hopes and fears of the console wars.

    Mainly the sillyness though.

Speaking of MGS, the gaf thread might not have so many meltdowns this month. The PA comic thread went out of control as MGS and PS3 fans started accusing Gabe and Tycho of being paid to dis MGS. Over 20 were banned.

I had a beautiful post up about how Nintendo won't release the Wii's successor until MS and Sony make a move, and given that they were so successful with the Wii, have a knack for improving well known technology, and now have the confidence to release new technology, they may even wait until the PS4 and the 720 are released.

One thing is for sure, both the R&D team and Intelligent Systems have already begun work on it. Hell, they may even know exactly what they'll do. Just a matter of refining the system.

I would imagine that the next Nintendo console will be on par or slightly more capable than the 360. GPUs will have come a long way. The Xenon is a PowerPC, right? Isn't that architecture pretty self contained? Couldn't Nintendo move to it and keep BC with the Wii/Cube?

The post was much longer but some how got deleted.

    :(
I don't really get why half those people were banned.

Well, the mods realized that they were pretty close to GameFAQs quality, so they're making an effort to root out the bullshit.

They also ban linking to Kotaku from time to time when Kotaku's retardness reaches stupid levels.

So, I can get behind that. Especially when they started banning people for freaking out about review scores.

If banning a few doofuses results in raising the overall IQ score there, I'm all for it. As it stands that place hurts my brain.

Anyway, a suggestion for the contest. Since we've got the predictions published in the OP, how about everyone figure out how far off they were on each system themselves instead of making one poor person hunch over a calculator for a few hours?

Gamepro does it all the time whenever they print some usually obvious and brain-dead "tip" for a game to pad out a review.

    Such as

Protip: Mario can squash Goombas flat if he jumps on their heads.

Edit: Or at least they did, I haven't read the thing in years. It might have gotten more intelligent lately, but considering the last time I checked they featured the fuckin' Family Guy game on the cover, I doubt it.

Uh, anyone have a link to a good example of the use of

    protip: blah blah blah

from whatever magazine uses that? I need to steal the formatting.

So on their website the formatting is just a gray caption underneath the picture. Is that how it is in print?

The answer thou seek'st may be found here, young squire: http://www.myconfinedspace.com/2006/11/20/protip/

EDIT: Wait, did you mean the current version? Because I know exactly 0 people who have opened that magazine in the past decade.

Er. Finding a Penny Arcader who actually reads Gamepro on a regular basis could be a tall order, since the rag is pretty insulting to your intelligence.

Gamepro? I never subscribed to this thing (I swear!) but it arrives regularly. (A "gift" from a relative?) I usually casually flip through it once then it sits on the counter for a while. From what I have seen the writing is terrible and everything seems like a big pay-off.

So I just scanned through a copy I had buried under papers on my desk, an issue from earlier this year, and I don't see the "pro-tip" thing anywhere; Maybe they don't do it anymore?

Speaking of MGS, the gaf thread might not have so many meltdowns this month. The PA comic thread went out of control as MGS and PS3 fans started accusing Gabe and Tycho of being paid to dis MGS. Over 20 were banned.

Wait, PA comic thread on GAF? Nice!

Some of us started posting them. Kinda wish I had made this one, 25 bannings and complete mod lockdown is nice.

The depths of insanity of MGS fans is beyond me.
