Download TCPview:

Then, use TCPview (run as admin if you're on Vista) to close all Steam TCP servers (this is important, NOT the UDP ones, just the TCP ones). Steam will then reconnect to a different server, which will hopefully get you a better speed. If you don't go faster in a couple of seconds, retry until you get a speed you like.
This shit totally needs to go into the OP, I've tipped this to so many people already.
Breaking News!PC Gaming is dead. Didn't you get the memo? Maybe that's not 100% accurate. Lets just say that the brick & mortar way of buying PC games within North America is on it's way out the door. Why? Probably because stores just don't stock 'em like they used to. Also, it's a perception issue:
It is absolutely a perception problem. I mean one of the things that happens is--Microsoft has an army of PR people that work for Microsoft. They have at least two agencies that are additional armies. Nintendo I'm not as familiar with their PR outline, but I'm sure it's similar. Sony is similar. The PC has nobody. They've got people like us, in our spare time, talking to guys like you. I mean if there were hundreds of PR people stationed around the world, whose whole job was to call you every day and tell you why the PC was a great platform, your perception would probably be different.
So if nobody is buying games in retail stores (in NA) then where are they getting them?

Steam is the futures dudes.
>> Instantly access your favorite games
The full Steam library and all future Steam releases are at your fingertips. After you've purchased a game, download it immediately and start playing.
>> Join the Steam Community
Now it's easy to find someone to play with, meet up with friends, connect with groups with similar interests, and host and join chats, matches, and tournaments. Best of all, it's all free.
>> Chat with your friends while gaming
With Steam's "Friends" service, you can talk to your friends while you play. You can also see when they're playing games and easily join the same servers together.
>> Easily browse multiplayer game servers
Steam's integrated server browser makes it easy to navigate thousands of Internet game servers.
>> Receive automatic game updates
Hunting for patches and downloading from unorganized web sites is so twentieth-century. On Steam, your games stay up-to-date by themselves. No hassles.
>> Play your games on any PC
Once you have a Steam account, you can sign in from any PC to access your games. Your games are associated with your account, not your computer.
This is now bullshit. Some games now come with 3rd Party DRM in addition to Steam's DRM. Meaning, that you can't access your games from any PC.
>> Enjoy Steam-only special offers
From pre-release discounts to free-play weekends, Steam delivers what gamers value most.
Steam is how you get your games, Steam is how you play your games, Steam is how you connect with you friends. As I see it, Steam is PC gaming.
As of this writing, there are about 323 games on Steam worth a total of $5311.03 (USD)
Extras
With such a cool service, someone must have done some extra things to build on it.
I know this guy, who made these super cool Steam signatures. They automatically use backgrounds for the games and the correct icon. Pretty neat, and they're 100% free!
You can also use a script on his page to see how much your Steam account would be worth if you were to buy every game individually.
Neat stuff!

I have been neglecting Steam lately. I should change that.

Also I completely agree about the folders idea for the friends list. I would make a folder called "People who just added me to get some stupid TF2 achievement" and it would be enormous.
Which of my Steam games shall I reinstall this week and start playing. Hmm.
Specifically, having some real friends and a lot of friends that I only have because of TF2 achievements. And that making it hard to find the people I actually care about on my list.
I imagine that Valve expected people to use small invite only groups for that.
November, as of the most recent delay announcement.
I live 5 minutes from Valve and not a day goes by that I don't think about marching into their office, saying "give me friend categories," and marching out. After having grabbed something expensive.
You should just stop by and give your suggestions. What do you have to lose? Maybe they would let you play L4D for a few minutes if you are friendly.
Doooooooooooo eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
Make sure to wail 'RELEASE LEFT4DEAD YOU ASSHOLES' as security throws you out the back.
Yes, I'm sure that Valve, the creators of the online distribution system Steam don't have a copy of Left 4 Dead in their offices. In fact, I'm sure that all the valve owners don't have the latest Left 4 Dead build on their steam accounts, because people certainly haven't had beta products on Steam accounts before.
Edit: and it's sunny outside. That's no atmosphere for being LEFT FOR DEAD. DUN DUN DUN.
Why?
Reposted from last topic because no one responded/noticed it/likes me.
Eh, it could've gone the other way just as easily. Kleiner was modeled after some random guy they saw in the elevator.
I know it's the same game, but dag nabbit, I love me some Steams.
You could try and make that suggestion on the Steam forums. Or just shoot Gabe Newell a quick e-mail saying it's a common sense feature you'd like to see added.
I say we boycott the PA comic on tuesdays and thursdays to protest the late Steam release of PAA. That'll show 'em.

I would have totally taken a tour if I were you.
Edit: If any of you ever do visit the Valve offices and meet some of the employees would you mind showing them my website and my signatures?
No.
