Migrating to a new PS3

My sisters boyfriend has been offered £400 for his 60gb launch PAL PS3. He asked me what I thought.

I asked him if he had ever used it to play a PS2 game, he said no, and that he had already sold all his old PS2 games, and had no intention to buy any more.

I said that it sounded like a fantastic deal for him, but that I would check online if there was anything I am missing.

His plan would be to back up all his saves onto a memory card, and buy a new 40gb console and a Wii with the difference.

Can he copy his gamertag (I know it's not called that, but I don't know the PS3 name for it) and how would he go about keeping all of his paid content, like GH3 DLC and PSN games?

Anything else to consider? I think the 40gb has less USB ports, but that isn't really relevant to the decision.

Your PSN account isn't tied to the console, just the e-mail/password you use to register it. So he can keep his PSN name on the new console. Also, I'm pretty sure you can re-download all the stuff you've paid for (there might be some kind of limit, 5 times? Or is it on 5 different consoles?).

Just make sure he wipes all the PSN info off the old PS3.

i think it's five times on anything other than the initial console. so all five on one new system, or once on five different systems, or whatever

And he can use a usb flash drive to copy all of his saves. Once he's got all that, he can just delete or format the drive and it's good to go. Might be better than messing with any memory cards or anything since the 40gb doesn't have card slots.

If he's worried, you can tell him to log into the PSN, and look for a game he's bought or a demo he's downloaded. He'll see a red "shopping bag." That means the PSN knows you've bought or downloaded that item.

Other than that, he's good to go. Sounds like a good deal, and as someone who owns a 40gb and has no interest in PS2 games, I've been quite happy with my system.
