Doctor Who: Season 4 Finale Starts Next Week!

Doctor Who

Let's be frank; Season 4 of Who was kind of a letdown. After Season 3, which only had two shockingly terrible episodes (Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks), Season 4 was mostly shitty, up until The Unicorn and the Wasp and the awesome Silence in the Library/Forest of the dead.

This week's episode, Midnight was also good, I thought. The creature was very inventive, and very weird.

Next week is the beginning of the finale. Confirmed plot elements include;

BIG FINALE SPOILERS
Davros, the revelation that Donna has been harbouring an Eight Legs, UNIT, the returns of Rose, Captain Jack, Martha and Sarah Jane Smith and the Shadow Proclamation.

If it looks like it's going all out, it's because it's Russell T Davies' final season finale as lead writer and Producer, before he bows out for Stephen Moffat, writer of the majority of the awesome episodes (The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). Hopefully that means we will see much more competent series arcs; RTD never failed to supply the glitz, but unfortunately, I feel he failed to supply the brains.

So yeah anyway, TALK ABOUT DOCTOR WHO IT IS AWESOME.

I watched it tonight and it was very good, even though im not usually a fan. Also Russel T. Davies went to my school as far as I know, and my Dad taught him either in college or on some theatre course.

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead was goddamn Awesome.

The brainwaves echo after death part is one of the most horrible things I ever seen. Properly heart wrenching.

Moffat is so good at pulling the heartstrings.

I properly nearly goddamn teared up at the end of The Girl in the Fireplace.

I know I should watch it, because I know it's a good show, but I just can't get into it where I feel the need to watch it like I do LOST or Battlestar Galactica

Midnight was kind of a letdown. But thats mostly cause Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead raised my expectations. I'm sure they saved the best for last.

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead was fantastic. Usually 2-part episodes kind of fall apart at the end but here the resolution was even better than the set-up.

Moffat's episodes remind me of Joss Whedon's episodes on Buffy/Angel. Even if you don't check the credits, you can usually tell when he's at the helm because everything's just a little more "on". The dialogue's a little sharper, the premises are more clever, the characters seem a little more "themselves".

RTD's episodes tend to be a little more straightforward. Midnight was decent. It felt a bit like a Twilight Zone episode (Humans are the real monsters).

    Wat ?

It was a great episode, because the Doctor wasn't in 'everyone will be ok, I'm the Doctor' mode...where everything works out ok because he is clever

i liked midnight because it was so centred on the single hook of the episode, and it was a clever hook

My problem with Midnight is that I have yet to be convinced that the new series Doctor is actually clever.

I've yet to see that he actually can solve problems (aside from Wasp and Unicorn; plus all Moffatt episodes).

Also, doesn't RTD have 1 more season before Moffatt takes over?

there isn't a proper season next year, only some special episodes, written by RTD

midnight was fun because it was clearly something that the doctor hadn't come across before

    yeah it's commissioned and everything

they basically said it's a format they'll probably stick to, of three or four seasons followed by a year out with only specials

I fucking hope so. Cause RTD should not get to define 3 doctor's personalities.

Also, I hope Moffat makes a new TARDIS interior. The current one is a fucking one room shack. Where the hell do they change?

    WHERE DOES DONNA POOP?!

The new room > old room. If I remember right, the only other ep to show other areas in the tardis is the one where sontarians invade galifray and they chase the doctor through his tardis.

not even remotely true, in the old episodes we saw a secondary control room, wardrobe, cloister room and zero room

the old design, aside from the now dated looking computers on the console, was much better; we're seriously supposed to believe that one of the most powerful space-time ships in the universe is operated by methods including but not limited to hitting it with a hammer, pumping a bicycle pump and spinning what looks like a kid's tricycle wheel?

    sure

the first and second appearances were tons better

also, i hope chiwetel ejiofor is the new doctor

I'm okay with the current control scheme. I mean, look at the best TARDIS design ever (8th doctor's) and it had pull levers and switches. It was perfect.

My problem with the current one is that A) it doesn't feel like a livable place and 2) there are no additional rooms.

Even when we didn't see the other rooms in the TARDIS we saw the door that lead out of the console room deeper into the TARDIS and people were constantly going into and out of it.

lots of people seem to think that the season will end with a big reset button that will get rid of tenth and ninth doctor and take us back to the eighth with none of the events of the last three seasons but that would be the gayest thing ever

That would be the gayest thing that RTD ever did.

That's gayer than Queer as Folk, and there was straight up boy on boy sex there.

    Torchwood doesn't exist.

Also; Paul McGann would not do Doctor Who again, as he hated the wig.

nah i've heard the reset thing a couple of times on this forum and on the internet at large

i think it is mostly die-hard whovians who think that if the last two regenerations are gotten rid of then it will go back to old style who rather than, you know, just carry on like nothing happened

My brother has a theory that the 12 regenerations (13 lives) thing is just a soft-rule among the Time Lords. It's sort of a "no, really, don't go past that."

Then again, Deadly Assassin indicated that the 13th life is pretty much hellish, so I've no idea. And it's been so long since I've seen Deadly Assassin.

Well they are goingn to have to address is eventually, unless of course they are going to have the adventures of Jenny Who or whoever the Doctor's daughter is.

Do those of you familiar with classic Who have any episode/storyline recommendations? I used to catch the occasional episode on late-night TV but didn't really get into the show until the relaunch.
