Gross Virus question (Body virus not PC)

So yesterday at 4am I started throwing up like 6 times, and since that, everything has been coming out the other end. The pattern is, i have the diarrhea and drink a lot of water, and then 15-20 minutes later after lots of stomach gurgling, I have it again. I know that at this rate I'll be dehydrated by like tomorrow unless my body is keeping some of the water, so I'm ready to head to the ER for rehydration as soon as I need it, but what I need to know is- can I take immodium? If it's between vomit and diarrhea, I'll take the latter, so I don't want to take it and vomit instead.
Thanks and apologies on a gross thread. Oh this virus lasted in other people I know for 6 days.

Now, I'm not 100% sure on this, I really think it's the sort of thing to get a medical opinion on, but most of the time it's better to just let it all out. BUT, if you're sure it's a virus and not a bacterial infection then it might be better.

An important thing is don't JUST drink water! This might sound gross but get some coke [regular coke] and mix in like a teaspoon of salt and drink that too. Don't worry about the caffeine, you NEED to replace your sugars and salts, dehydration isn't just about losing water!
Or drink Gatorade or something like that if that's easier for you. But seriously, salts and sugars, do it. Especially if you've not been keeping any food down either.

If it isn't extremely serious vomiting and shits, you might want to let it play itself out. As a parallel, when you have a fever, you don't want to take something that's fever-reducing until the fever reaches something like 102. Until that point, the reaction is just combating the virus. Once it feels like it's actually damaging you, take steps to limit the reaction.

But you should still go to the doctor if symptoms persist.

Ok, its just a stomach virus. I had this 2 years back around December. Basically knocked me out for 3 days and was mainly vomit (and I didn't vomit for 10 years before that! My streak!).

What you need to do is not drink so much liquid at once. You are basically filling up your stomach with water that your body can't absorb all at once at it just wants to get rid of it.

Lay down, and take sips of Gatorade every 5 minutes or so. That way your body can absorb it, and just try to sleep and stay inactive.

I had somewhat this same problem back when I got food poisoning - I was dehydrated to the point where I was having dreams about being lost and wandering in a desert.

Like the other posts have said, you need more than just water - I found the best thing was to get some Pedialyte, and mix it with powdered Crystal Light or other fruity sugar-free drink so it doesn't taste so nasty. I felt so much better after drinking a few large glasses of that, it was almost scary. If you can't find that or still can't take the taste, at least get some Gatorade.

Don't attempt to do anything even remotely strenuous...I don't know if the Immodium would help at all, you really need to ask a doctor or at least a pharmacist about that.

Gatorade and similar sports drinks are really good for this. Keep the drink at room temperature. Start trying mildly salted biscuits as soon as you figure you won't throw up right away; they'll help replenish salt and get your intestine working again. Blackberry soup is great, and over here you can get a brand with cultured bacteria to help restore your now-extinct intestinal flora, but I'm not sure how widely that's available.

Congratulations! You have the Norovirus. It's a total pain and takes you out for 3-4 days. It's complete misery, but you'll bounce back. All I did was drink water.

Are you sure that it's a virus and not a bacteria?

Check on that. If it's a virus, you can just wait it out (generally). If it's a bacteria, it could far more serious.

3clipse, I'm 99% sure it's viral, because like 3 people from my church have had this lately, said it's a virus going around (at least one of them went to a doctor) and I just finished an entire week at the church with non-handwashing little children (Vacation Bible School).

Thanks for the advise guys, I've pretty much been slowly drinking gatorade, eating saltines and sleeping all day. I'm not feeling "better" but I'm more lucid and not 2 steps away from hallucinations like I was yesterday. Oh and my body hasn't rejected the gatorade yet!

From my experience, the vomiting was only a first night symptom. I'd invest in some good, soft toilet paper, though.

Yeah...that's been one painful side effect of all of this...
