Digital distribution is already the redheaded stepchild (according to NPD stats anyway) of game sales, further splitting the market is just going to confuse gamers and distributors alike.
NPD has no idea how much money Steam or any digital platform makes. They don't release thier numbers. By all accounts Valve is making bank, and most devs who talk about it say download services have been good for them.
There is a reason MS is pushing so hard to get digital distribution of full games/media to consoles as a standard thing. The next Xbox is going to have a big ol' harddrive.
