The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm working on a project right now where the file volume is in the gigabytes and I need an easy way to transport it.
My roommate had a Corsair Voyager 8GB GT and it was incredible.
Unfortunately, they stopped making the 8GB model, and reviews on the new 16GB model are extremely negative (citing drastically slower speeds and unreliability).
What's the new hotness in the premium thumb drive market?
I was thinking about this but they are still slower.
I mean, space is not the problem, I know how much space I need, about 12GB, which a 16GB will cover.
I just don't want to get something slow. I don't want to be stuck having to choose between either making a 30 minute back up 2 or 3 times a day or compiling huge ass programs right off a slow thumb drive.
I've done some research and I've found one or two that are in the 20mb/s write speed range which will be great.
I mean, I guess what I really need is to tell my IT guy to get me an eSATA card. I actually didn't think of that till now. I got eSATA drives all over my house, sometimes I sit down and there's one that just stole my spot on the couch, etc. I just can't plug em into my work PC right now.
You could always buy a P2 card, that'll solve all your problems. Transfer speeds START at 40 MB/sec. It'll run you around a 1k USD though. These are normally used for HD Video but you could use them to store other data.
Alternatively Memory Stick PRO-HG will transfer at the speeds you want, but you'll need to make sure you have a reader that supports high speeds like that. Those probably aren't cheap either but might cost less than a P2.
Either way, flash memory intended for HD video will best mean your needs since those types of cards need to be FAST. Sure it's not as elegant as a thumb drive but it's less clunky and safer than a portable hard drive.

That is cool though.
