Here's the problem. My only console is a Wii (I don't even own a PS2) and I love rhythm games, especially Guitar Hero, of which I only own the third installment. This summer/fall, I'm going to be making a large video game purchase involving some sort of awesome rhythm game and possibly a console. I'm on a tight budget. Here are my options:
1.) Rock Band and Xbox 360
Pros: There is a great Live community here. DLC. Large 360 library with titles very relevant to my interests. Harmonix seems to get lavish praise while Activision gets shat on. Rock Band 2?
Cons: Expensive. $500 in all for a non-arcade 360 and Rock Band. I don't own an HDTV. My Wii Les Paul sits and gathers dust.
Questions: I know the GH3 Les Paul works with Rock Band, but does it also work with GH2 for 360? I've got the Goozex points, if I buy GH3 for 360 mostly for the extra guitar, I can pick up GH2 off Goozex and play it for the first time?
2.) Rock Band and PS3
Pros: DLC. PS3 has a decent library with titles some titles relevant to my interests. Harmonix. Blu-ray player. Rock Band 2?
Cons: Expensive and confusing. $550 if I'm doing it right. I don't own an HDTV. My Wii Les Paul sits and gathers dust. PS3 Les Paul incompatible.
Questions: Do the PS2 versions of Guitar Hero work with backward compatibility? If so, what guitar can you use with them? Why the hell are there so many different SKUs for the PS3?!
3.) Rock Band for Wii
Pros: Cheap! I already own the console.
Cons: The stripped features and lack of DLC (it could go on an SD card, folks) is a goddamn insult. I don't care whose fault it is, it pisses me off. My Wii Les Paul STILL sits and gathers dust. WTF! (No fancy new toy to play with, because who am I kidding, if I got a 360 or PS3, it's not JUST for Rock Band.)
Questions: I'm sure no one knows yet, but how does the track pack work? I swap discs after loading? I have to load the track pack from the start?
4.) Guitar Hero 4 and 360/PS3
Pros: Music maker. More drum pads. Open strum on bass. Everlong. Supposedly good, weekly DLC.
Cons: Probably more expensive than Rock Band. Possibly of questionable quality. Long wait.
Questions: Since it comes out in October and info is scarce, does anyone have any reliable sources about instrument compatibility, etc?
5.) Guitar Hero 4 and Wii
Pros: ALLEGEDLY not crippled (I'll believe it when I see it, but it was mostly true for GH3, minus the DLC) Music maker, all the cool new features. Everlong. Supposedly DLC. Again, I own the console, so it's easy on the budget.
Cons: Possibly of questionable quality. Long wait.
Questions: Since it comes out in October and info is scarce, does anyone have any reliable sources about instrument compatibility, etc?
If you answer a question, be sure to trim the quote down, since this is a moderately long post. I'd appreciate any advice or additional options. I was really sure I was going to go with option 1, but I've started to waver. It's a lot of money and I'm having trouble committing with so much awesome stuff on the horizon.

I don't know if the PS3 Guitar Hero controller works with the PS2 games, I don't believe it does. I remember that a couple of companies put out adapters to allow use of the PS2 guitars with BC games, since the PS3 only has USB ports and not PS2 controller ports.
However, the PS2 Rock Band Controller and the PS3 Rock Band controller are one in the same.
If I were you, I'd just wait until the new games come out. Yeah, it's a long wait, but if you're really stressed about it in the meantime, you could buy the Wii Rock Band. It's been rumored that Microsoft is going to drop the price of their console soon, like, before the end of the summer, and we don't know what Rock Band 2 is yet. My money is on that it'll be even more awesome than Rock Band, cause that's how these things go.

yeah, I said it. it looks rad.
get the 360/ps3 version. there are seriously no benefits to the wii version at all
I think Rock Band, as opposed to Guitar Hero III, has a far superior presentation and greater polish. I actually don't particularly like GHIII's presentation anymore because of Rock Band. Also, as long as you get the 360 or PS3 version, there's a ass-ton of DLC that is likely to be compatible with Rock Band 2.
Guitar Hero: World Tour might have a better presentation then GHIII. Hell, it should have a better presentation since the screenshots look a whole lot like Rock Band screens. Pretty much the only thing I think World Tour will have over Rock Band/Rock Band 2 is that its instruments might be a little better. Just by looking at them, the drums look to be constructed in a more efficient manner, though I honestly think the cymbals will be the new bass pedal and go pretty quickly. The drum heads look like they might be designed a bit better, though. I don't know what to think of the guitar yet.
There is really very little that's been said about Rock Band 2. In fact, the only reason people even know a sequel is coming is because the box art was leaked a while back. If you can wait a couple weeks, I'm betting there will be the first details listed at E3 for the game. If you like what you hear of Rock Band 2, then you can either wait for it or buy Rock Band now. If you get DLC, they've indicated that they're going to make sure to make all RB DLC compatible with any sequels, so you'll have some extra DLC when you decide to get RB 2.
Because it's possible Harmonix will update their instruments or at least improve them a bit, and if you get Rock Band now and find out Rock Band 2 is supposed to have superior instruments, it could sting a little.

The guitar hero controllers on the 360 work with all 3 games, and you can always get another one or an xplorer on the cheap for multiplayer Guitar Hero. Rock Band comes with the Strat, so if you get Rock Band and GH3 you'll have the instruments you need for a 4 piece band. And you'll be ready for whatever instruments work with Rock Band 2 and GH4.
The Wii versions suck, unfortunately, and DLC is what really makes Rock Band worth it
I guess if you really want a PS3 you could do that (get the MGS4 bundle), but you lose out on GH2, and you'll need an extra strat to play 4-player Rock Band and an extra Les Paul to play 2-player Guitar Hero.
This is one of my fears. The game is only seven months old and already my thoughts of purchase are being hampered by a looming supposed sequel of which we know very little.
This is the way I've been leaning for all the reasons you mentioned (I suspected a few, thanks for confirming the suspicions). It's really great but unfortunately expensive. A good deal for sure, and builds up the most instrument interoperability but still expensive. I can definitely wait for a 360 price drop if it's rumored for this summer.
Are you sure?
When I called around asking for the GH 360 controllers about 4 months back, the GHII controller was like 20 bucks used, the Wireless GHIII controller was 30, I assume, because its wireless. :P
I'm down in New Mexico if that makes a difference.

Wait of 360 price drop then buy:
360 20GB model
Rock Band Special Edition
Use this offer to return my Wii copy of Guitar Hero III:
http://www.activisiongameexchange.com/configurations/ACTIVI/refundoffer.pdf
Use the cash to purchase a 360 wireless Les Paul (That's a $40 gain and I really love the Les Paul)
Get Guitar Hero II, III (game only) from Goozex. The service is flooded with the game. I'll wait a few weeks to request because the point value is bound to fall.
How does that sound?
Edit: Scheme updated for a cool $40 savings.
EDIT: Don't lose your receipt. They look for those for RMAs now.
