DVDs play but CDs won't

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, with a TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD (rom) TSL462c disc drive, that doesn't play cd-roms or audio cds, only DVDs.

When I put a cd into the drive, it attempts to speed up, then stops a few times, before finally giving up. Device manager says everything is fine.

I have uninstalled the driver, and reinstalled it to no effect. I have blindly followed the directions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 and removed the upper and lower filters in the registry.

I'm kind of at a loss here. Also, I think it is screwing with me. I put in a PS2 cd I had lying around, and that worked.
