Socializing Monday-Friday 9-5

For the past few months I've been working weekend evenings, and on most weekdays I'm in the gym training sometime between 6 and 10pm. This has basically killed my social life. Can anyone recommend activities where I might be able to meet new people during the day or even late evenings Monday - Friday? Or perhaps some resources I could use to find things to do during this time frame.

I live in Toronto, I'm 23 and I'm up for pretty much anything that'll let me hang out with people around my age.

Is it possible to move your workout time to earlier in the day? Essentially, it looks like your schedule eliminates nightlife possibilities.

So, you have to go in a different direction. Check coffee shops in your area for groups or events they might have going earlier in the day (book clubs, chess, discussion, etc.). Maybe perhaps sign up for a class of some sort at a community center or college?

Barring that, it's summer. Go for a walk in the park and see if there are people hanging out playing kickball and such.

Unfortunately I can't really change my gym time, all my potential training partners work 9-5, and I can't afford private lessons.

How is working out at the gym with a couple of different people every day not a social life?

I guess it is in some ways, but mostly we are concentrating on what we are doing so there's not much time for socializing.

I guess what I really miss is just hanging out and chatting with people, going to see movies, and playing games that don't involve hitting, choking, or taking people down. As fun as that is a person needs a little variety.

So, what about your co-workers? Are they not suitable friends? Can't do anything with them after work the next day?

Don't mean to sound mean, but I just wondered why they haven't been mentioned.

Try your best to meet people in the hospitality industry. Chefs/wait staff will still be working 5 days a week, but they often take their days off in the middle or beginning of the week and they work hours are either focused around the evening or middle of the day. Very few would work 9 - 5.

    Also, students.

I kind of know this boat but instead I work 4pm-12am and live in Boston, So my social life ATM is the Penny Arcade forums and writing a Chuck Spec Script.

Any tips for the 2nd shifters while we're at it?

My coworkers are great, but they all work second jobs or go to school full time. On the occasions that we have gone out together it always involves excesses of alcohol and smoking, which I can't afford too often.

I know there are other people in the same boat as me, I just don't know how to find them.

Hmm, in that case all I can suggest is that you try to find some sort of organization you can participate in that does something you enjoy.

Perhaps a hobby shop or sports related activity?

I also second the vote for a day-college course. There must be something you want to learn, and you can meet people at the same time.
