I think it would be really cool if the ps3 let you pause a game and open a browse. That way you could jump into the forums or gamefaqs to look for tips if stuck.

Man, i've been able to open a browser window while playing a game on my pc for years.

    Sorry.

I fucking love the Wii Browser. Being able to point at shit and watch videos online is great to me. Plus if you get Orb running, you can stream videos from your PC to the TV.

    Do go on.

Go to www.myorb.com and sign up for it. You install the program on your computer, then choose a folder to share out. Then you go to www.myorb.com on your Wii and it'll stream whatever you shared out.

My laptop has a webcam on it, and I was able to view that from my Wii. It is amazing.

thats cool. But I don't see a way to sign up. Are they closed or something?

As shitty as it is, I have used the Opera browser for the DS while traveling. Quickly finding an AP and then checking my e-mail has saved my butt several times around the world. Okay, maybe it didn't really save my butt, but it was convenient .

jcrooks: i'm not sure, i'd actually see browser usage increase somewhat between the highest and lowest ends of the tech scale - there is a huge market of young users these days who can comfortably manage a system for what they want. read: facebook, myspace, youtube. if there's a browser in existence, someone will figure out how to spend ridiculous amounts of time social networking on it. i'm not saying this is necessarily how it works and i'm sure the ps3 in particular hasn't penetrated that savvy, non-gamer market yet (maybe it never will), but the browser is one of the first things a lot of my more casual friends mention when it gets shown off for whatever reason

This is VERY true. Just this weekend a buddy of mine came over. When I mentioned the PS3 had a web browser that could play Youtube, he wanted to see it. We then proceeded to spend the next 2 hours on youtube around the TV, watching hip hop videos.

Hell he even said "I need a PS3 for this".

This is coming from a guy that is the definition of casual gamer. Pretty much the only games he'll play are EA sports titles.

I'm posting from my PSP right now. It sucks but it works. Certainly comes in handy for quick and casual browsing.

I ordered all of my PC parts from the PSP when the previous one died.

Quick question before I hit the sack ... does the PSP have any type of support for a plug in keyboard?

I heard there was one hitting the market that plugs into the miniUSB. I haven't heard anything about it lately though.

If the X360 browser had a browser I would make love to Bill. I mean, my conmputer is only 3ft away but it requires the removal of my fat ass out of the comfy chair into the less than comfy chair AND two or three steps. That and I have to find a place to put my controller, tossle my hair, rub my eyes and grab dinner at the same time!

    But I digress.

IE would be completely insecure but so handy for quick googles that I want to run without going three feet to my laptop.

I use the Wii browser to play YouTube videos when a lot of people are over and to stream video to the TV through Orb. Otherwise when I'm playing a game I have the laptop open on my bed beside me so I can browse and play.

My major fucking beef with the Wii browser is that they can't/won't update the damn thing. Youtube and Dailymotion are pretty much the only video sites that work. I don't currently have cable and I really enjoy watching various Let's Play videos while chilling on the couch. This is becoming more and more difficult as creators use other sites that need a newer version of flash.

Yeah, the lack up updates on the browser make me a sad panda. I can still watch youtube vids, but... there's a lot of stuff I wish I could do. I haven't tried yet, but I wonder if I could somehow set up one of my computers so that I could watch videos directly from it (not upload to web then download from web, but actual local network) maybe using apache or something. But, yes, I use it. Not for GameFAQs, because that's annoying to have to actually go back to the main menu, boot the internet channel, use my frakking wiimote to type in the name of the game, scroll through miles of text...
Laptop next to the couch. Much easier.

That's not the Wii's fault though. It's adobe's fault for not letting Nintendo use the updated flash player. At least, that's what I read.

I have a 360 and I wouldn't really care if Microsoft put a browser on it or not since it sits right next to my PC and I usually have Firefox running most of the time. I could see how people might use a console's browser if their computer is broken or something but I guess it's just not for me.

Web browsing as a feature in the 360 has been something discussed internally within MS, ad nauseum. After all, MS is well known for crafting its own, very popular browser in Internet Explorer. Shouldn't it be easy to add it to the dash?

Well, the answer is no. I won't go into all the specific details, but it's not trivial. There's a lot of security things involved. While other companies can get away with not securing their apps, MS is target #1 for hackers and securing a web browser for the 360, and preventing users from getting hacked and bricking their console, is not an easy task.
Hypervisor? Sandbox? Virtual Machine? There must be a way to lock it down in a way that disallows access to the 360's real OS (the one that's actually running 'on the metal').
I know that sand-boxing in Linux is pretty easy with UML, I haven't heard of any techniques to break out of those. Surely MS can (or has already?) code something similar? Virtual PC?

Keep in mind that the 360 is using a different architecture (PPC) than usual. Anyway, not saying that it can't be done ... just that it's not easy. There are other, more important and interesting, features to be worked on. And even if one were released, as you can see below, there's a "maintenance tax" that needs to be paid in terms of keeping it up and running (making sure the latest version of Flash works with it, fixing bugs, conforming to new standards that pop up, etc.).

Who knows, maybe it'll come around eventually, but I know personally (and it appears I'm not alone), a web browser is not a big deal to me and I'd much rather see the resources spent on something else.

Old, but I use the Wii browser to watch Strongbad on my TV. Other than that though it doesn't get any use.

For the record Youporn.com also works on the Wii Web Browser.

Thought looking at porn on a wii is kind of like smoking a joint in front of your six year old cousin.

The title of this thread makes that shitty rap song by that one guy start playing in my head. Also, I quite liked the Wii browser before I had trouble connecting to it with the Wifi dongle and decided that seeing titties on my TV had lost its novelty. I might have to check it out for that one service mentioned a page back or so, though.
