So I finally have an iPod that can play video, so I'd love to get into this whole podcast thing. I've subscribed to the Strongbad E-Mails podcast but that's it.
I love podcasts. I am a talk radio junkie thanks to a lot of reasons. But I am utterly burnt out on political talk radio, because it's mostly just some asshole screaming hyperbole into a microphone for 2-4 hours a day. For that reason I find podcasts to be a godsend.
Here are my suggestions
This Week in Tech - Fairly solid tech news podcast run by Leo Laporte, formerly of the Screen Savers. There's a fair amount of circle jerking between he and his guests over how great they all are, but once they settle down there's usually some good inside news and discourse.
Downloadable Content - PA's semi-regular podcast. Some of the podcasts have moments that are just as funny as some of their best strips.
GFW Radio "The Brodeo" - 1up's PC gaming podcast. It's entertaining and some of the shit the hosts say is hilarious.
1up Yours - Garnett Lee and Shane B can seriously get their whine on but it's still an awesome gaming podcast.
BBC Newspod - Daily podcast containing selections from various BBC radio shows. The quality of their reporting is so much better than anything you'll see or hear in the USA.
1UP Show - 1up's weekly video podcast. I love it. It's shot in a style somewhere between a candid documentary and a skate video.
I like Buzz Out Loud for daily tech news and discussion. It's an audio podcast, but they're recording a video version every Friday now. A lot of the CNet TV content is fun to watch too, though most of it is only around 5 minutes long so it's more tailored for quick breaks than something like the lengthier 1UP Show.
Poke around in the iTunes podcast listings too, there's some neat stuff like National Geographic shorts and you can even get the entire TV broadcast of the NBC nightly news.
Aside from the 1up ones, Giant Bomb has a pretty good podcast too. It's the former Gamespot guys like Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis, and they recently added two other guys who I think were also from Gamespot.
I enjoy 1up Yours as above. Here's a few others I enjoy.
UncleGamer Radio - 2 guys that do a lot of videogame related news and reviews, previews and so on. Pretty good to listen to.
Remember When - same 2 guys as above, but focuses on current "geek" culture as well as remembering older "geek" type shows, movies, and so on. Show is damn hilarious sometimes.
Video Game Outsiders - I really like one of the two guy hosts on here as he most represents my views, but good goddamn sometimes the other two hosts on this can whine. For all that, I still enjoy most of this podcast, even though it's a bit lengthy.
I've also started recently with the Gamerscore Blog video and audio podcasts, still undecided, but they sure seem ok so far.
I listen to 3 CNet podcasts, Buzz Out Loud(fantastic podcast), MP3 insider(all about MP3 players/music stores), and Dialed In(Cell phones). I also watch some of the CNet TV stuff as podcasts, but like was mentioned, they are usually in the 5min range, so not a lot of substance. I also catch the podcast of CNet Live. Tom Meritt and Biran Cooley run a live show on CNet TV every thrusday at 1pm Pacific time. if you can catch it live that's ideal, but they also record it and put it out as a video podcast the next day. It's mostly a call in help show, but they also do an interview every week, profile free software and web apps, as well, I enjoy watching it.
I listen to a few of the Leo Laporte Podcasts, This Week in Tech is just the flagship podcast for the TWiT network(www.twit.tv) I also listen to MacBreak weekly and Windows Weekly. Leo does some really good stuff.
I listen to Major Nelso Radio as well. Major Nelson is one of the big guys in the Xbox department in Microsoft, he does a weekly podcast with interviews from game developers, xbox news, etc. he also does MPD numbers, holds contests, it's pretty good. I skip the interviews sometimes, but the show is good.
I listen to the Maximum PC podcast for my real geeky tech news. I find it quite funny most of the time, although sometimes they can piss me off, YMMV with this one, give it a try for a couple episodes. You'll either love it or hate it.
I listen to 1Up yours, as already mentioned here.
Downloadable content from PA is awesome, if only they would put it out more.
And lastly, I watch Tekzilla with Patrick Norton and Veronica Belmont. Tekzilla is made by Revision3, the same company that does diggnation. I find it pretty good. Started watching it when Veronica started co-hosting, as I have a geek crush on her.
Also look if your local news station puts out podcast versions of their news programs. It's a really neat thing to do if you miss the news the previous day. I have both Global National, and Global Edmonton(Canadian network national and my local station) delivered to me as video podcasts.
Ya, I bought my first iPod for music, but the introduction of podcasts into iTunes has meant that I actually don't listen to that much music anymore. I think that on average I have 20 hours of podcasts a week that I listen to. The nice thing is that podcasts have completely replaced radio for me, especially after getting a stereo with an iPod dock installed in my car.
I you guys. You've already mentioned almost all the podcasts I listen to. And listed a few others that I really need to check out now.
My only two other podcasts that I frequent:
Legendary Thread - This is another podcast from 1UP.com, covering World of Warcraft and MMOs in general. Even though it's been months since I played WoW, it's still a fun podcast to listen to, especially if you plan on coming back to WoW for the next expansion (like I am).
Escape Pod - If you're a lover of science fiction, you'll definately want to check out EP. It's a weekly reading of a sci-fi short story. Most episodes are about 40 minutes long. I've heard some fascinating stories on here!
I love these threads 'cause it almost always gives me a new podcast to subscribe to.
The aforementioned 1up Yours and GFW (with GFW being the best because Shane is a giant fucking douchebag) and ,when it updates, Retronauts. Retronauts is a look back on old game series. This isn't my favorite, but it's good background noise. The biggest problem is that most of the guys that show up are smarmy bastards who want to show off how much video game knowledge they have, but there can be gold.
Coverville is a themed cover song show (for example, a Weezer cover song show or indie bands covering more famous songs or Johnny Cash covering songs mixed with covers of Johnny Cash songs), a couple times a week. The host always makes some good picks.
SModcast, Kevin Smith's podcast. As much as I loved Smith when I was younger, his movies have lost that spark. However, I've always felt he was a better speaker and storyteller, as evidenced in his commentaries and Evening With Kevin Smiths. Well, SModcast is a weekly shindig with him and his producer, Scott Mosier, just bullshitting. And it's pretty damn solid.
Wait wait... don't tell me, the NPR newscast with carl castle and petter seagal
If we're going NPR we have to include Science Friday and Car Talk and This American Life
oh and while we're ranting about 1up yours... I wish Garnet would leave... the guy never has his facts right, sucks at videogames, and in general needs to think less of himself

It's a great podcast
Legendary Thread is pretty good as well and im not the biggest mmo fan and not interested in subscribing to it but it's pretty interesting to listen to.
1up yours is alright but GFW radio is easily the best 1up podcast.
I also enjoy Gamers with jobs podcast
Top Secret Podcast from Capcom is really good as well
I will have to listen to Coverville, Downloadable content and see how they are.

Any of the 1up network audio podcasts are pretty decent depending on topic.
1up finally put EGM Live to bed and replaced it with a show called 1up FM. It's hosted by the dude who has done the news on 1up Yours the past couple weeks and Nick Suttner.
They actually have segments mostly focusing on news, and unlike EGM Live they stay on topic so far. I'm glad to have something decent to listen to on Mondays though.

The first week was promising. Maybe it's just me, but it seemed a helluva lot more professional and mature than EGM Live. And I don't mean in an "on topic" way. GFW Radio is almost always off-topic, but they have some damn intelligent conversations there, more so than all of the other podcasts combined. (As you may guess, I'm a bit of a Shawn Elliott fanboy) In fact, when they took over last week's 1UP Yours (Garnett, Shane, and company were away), I was again pleasantly surprised by the level of discourse happening.

Yeah it's definately more professional, and it's a nice change of pace from the looser format shows. I also am a Shawn Elliott fanboy and as an avid PC gamer GFW is always interesting to me. I hope they can continue doing it, everyone seems to be leaving Ziff Davis.
If youre in your mid to late 20s i recommend retroforce go from destructoid.
they just talk about the video games of old and talk about how games today are shit by comparison. basically its cranky old men (and a girl) in their rocking chairs. still fun and funny though

The odd thing is that leaving Ziff Davis doesn't necessarily mean leaving the podcasts. Several folks, most notably John Davison, still show up on 1UP Yours on a semi-regular basis. I am hoping that the same happens with Sean Malloy from GFW.
The second week of 1UP FM was good. I like how all of the podcasts I listen to have different formats, in addition to the different hosts, in order to better differentiate them.
I had a brief message exchange with Phil Kollar the other day in regards to some inaccuracies one of his guys posted in a news item. Seemed like a genuinely nice, professional guy.
I was really quite impressed with the 1up FM show, I haven't gotten all the way through the first episode yet (I tend to set podcasts to play as I'm getting ready for bed, and usually am asleep before they finish), but it's definitely far more entertaining and informative than EGM "Watch Shane run roughshod over everyone" Live was.
The couple of times Dan Hsu was on EGM Live were pretty good, but the rest of the time the strong, ridiculous personalities tended to win out over the quieter ones.
I wonder whether there was another reason to Elliott stepping aside from 1up Yours. I got the impression that his style of conversation tended to interrupt the frat-boy drunken flow that Garnett and Shane seem to specialise in. Which is all well and good, but again they don't tend to have someone to reign them in. Luke Smith did a fantastic job at that.
I think my favourite anecdote regarding Luke Smith was when he was at a press event of some kind and he was talking to a few guys from Blizzard, discussing AQ (just after it had opened). The Blizzard guys were naturally pretty enthusiastic about the whole event, and asked him how much he'd been exposed to. Smith pointed to himself and said "Scarab Lord" which sent the Blizzard guys into a bit of hero worship of their own.

Maybe it's just me, but I get the impression of a "rift" of sorts happening at 1UP. On one side, you've got folks like Shawn Elliott, Jeff Green, Kollar, etc. who have really elevated the conversation around gaming. Yes, they talk games, but they also spend a lot of time talking about the industry, about the business, about games media and reviews are handled, the problems around fanboyism, etc. On the other side, you've got folks like Garnett and Shane which seem to be just fanboys that just happen to work in the games media business. Sure, they talk business sometimes, but there's also a lot of rampant fanboyism and bias present (most notably with Shane), which muddies things considerably.
I don't mean to say that the latter is bad ... it's good to have enthusiasm and passion. I don't mind that Shane is a Sony fanboy because at least he makes it clear he's such. But personally, I think the industry needs more folks like Shawn and Totilo and N'Gai which add a level of intelligent discourse and objectivity that, frankly, hasn't really existed before.
So, I get the feeling that Shawn left 1UP Yours because he just wasn't fitting into the madness that is Garnett and Shane. His attempts to "reel them in" didn't appear to be working. It certainly doesn't help either that being a part of two 1.5+ hour long podcasts a week takes up a lot of time.
Anyway, as for Luke, he's one reason why I listen to the Bungie podcast regularly as well. I have a friend at Bungie who works closely with Luke and he tells me that he's just as hilarious and witty outside the podcast as he is during them.
That's exactly what I thought about Shawn deciding not to do 1up Yours anymore. Not because of the time investment... but specifically it wasn't worth investing his time in talking to those guys for that amount of time.
If Garnett would just spend 10 minutes reading about gaming news per week he could at least be more accurate and informed than normal. I swear I can't stand it when that guy gets on one of his "OH COME ON!" rants when he's so far out of the loop even my wife knows better.

That's pretty much my sense of things as well. I think it's also worth pointing out that Luke had something of an advantage when dealing with Shane and Garnett in that he also had John at full strength to also help cut through the bullshit. John of late has been really disappointing in his insights, commentary and ability to balance out the podcast when he's guested. I know that's more than likely to be a result of his position changing to one of an outsider rather than "boss overlord" of 1up, but it's really changed how relevant I find him.
Garnett works decently when he's guiding a podcast along, but in terms of commentary and analysis, he's so bad at getting the facts right that it was a running gag for the better part of a year on the show itself whenever he opened his mouth to expound something as fact. As you say, he's really an enthusiast, which is fine, except when he tries to operate as an analyst of the industry.
From FaceballMcDougal's post, it's good to know I'm not the only person who still has a problem with it.
I'm interested in finding out what Sean Malloy is planning to do, and I'm hopeful based on the promise that he'd come back to guest on the podcast on a semi-regular basis. That'd indicate he's staying in SF.
Chud's Podcasts. Chud is great. www.chud.com Great movie website. Good articles, good people. The Podcast is fucking insane. If you like terrible (awesome) puns and people who have seen every movie ever, this is the podcast to listen to. If you want normal, boring movie discussions, look elsewhere. It's fucked up and you probably won't like it. Give it a shot. Subscribe here is the subscribe feed.
As for 1up personalities, I actually like the fact that Garnet, unlike Shane, is not a totally know it all douchebag. Who cares if he doesn't wake up every morning and read every article about what happened in video game news? Good for him. It is at least a different perspective than Shane's "I've beaten every game that's good and I'm better than you and if I haven't played it it's not worth it and if it's from Japan it's better than God and so I'm going to be smug little cock and continue to suck off Kojima in everything I say if you don't like the cutscenes in MGS 4 you're a peasant" perspective. This is not to say that Garnet's drunken "Dude, I got so wasted last night and I'm drunk right now IT'S MY GODDAMN PODCAST!!!!" attitude is much better. But at least he's doesn't act superior to the whole fucking world.
In fact, I consider Shawn Elliot to be the opposite side of the same coin as Shane. They both talk A LOT, they're both very opinionated in that my opinion is the only one that's right kind of way, they both have massive hard ons for THEIR game and they both can really be tools. But at least Shawn doesn't always sound that way and I'd rather listen to him any time of the day.
My problem with Garnett is the attitude he has that "This is wrong! This is outrageously stupid! How could they do this!?" which is then totally pointless because he has his facts wrong. As I said, when he's running the podcast and just discussing things from a "This is cool, this is what I like as a gamer" point of view that's all cool. It's when he tries to act like an authority figure/opinion, but is missing key elements of information it's a little silly.
I think that Shawn's more open to discussion than Shane is. When Shane interacts with someone who has equal or greater knowledge/debating skill, he shouts, then clams up and sulks. Shawn takes it as a challenge and will actually treat it as a debate, and potentially learn from it, rather than defending his position until all are one.
Gamercast Network: Video Game Show: This is the one podcast that I have stuck with for years. A round-table style show, they discuss gaming news and do game reviews every now and then. Updated late Tuesday/Early Wednesday.
Hak5 Video Podcast: Two guys started this show three years ago with just an idea and have since turned it in to a production that rivals any show on Revision3 even without a budget. The show focuses on hacking, but it's not all about breaking in to the Gibson. Updated at the beginning of the month.
The Mac Observer's Mac Geek Gab: A show about troubleshooting random OS X and Mac issues. You might get 20 seconds of news per show, but they really focus on taking listener questions about Macs. Bonus: The hosts aren't Apple elitists and don't have the stereotypical arrogant attitude that a lot of Mac users seem to have. Updated on Tuesdays.
Sarcastic Gamer Podcast: Another podcast about gaming. News, reviews, etc., etc. Updated on Mondays. Sarcastic Gamer: Humpday Update: The short show from the same guys that do the main podcast. Updated on Wednesdays.
I used to listen to a bunch of the TWiT shows, but I got tired of the self-love circle jerks about how great they are, especially the hosts on MacBreak Weekly. Diggnation was also in the rotation for a while, but I took it out due to it being the same episode every week.

If Garnett would just spend 10 minutes reading about gaming news per week he could at least be more accurate and informed than normal. I swear I can't stand it when that guy gets on one of his "OH COME ON!" rants when he's so far out of the loop even my wife knows better.
ugh
Came here to recommend this. Seriously these guys are really funny I had to stop listening to it in the car because I was laughing so hard at points.
