360 repair question

So a friend of mine has a good deal from a friend trying to get rid of his 360 for 300 dollars. Which includes 12 games and 3 controllers but he noticed there is a small rattling sound whenever you pick up the system. Like if a solder piece broke off. So my question is:

How hard is to to send in a used 360 to get it fixed? And would it be cheaper for him in the end to get this deal or just buy a new one?

Every 360 I've ever picked up has had that rattling noise.

Of course, all of those inevitably red ringed.

It's not hard to send one in, and if it's red ring (or you lie and tell them it is), it's free. Otherwise it's $100.

I think the rattling noise is the CD grip. It's magnetised so that it can run the disc when vertical, and of course it's an electromagnet, which doesn't operate when the machine is off.

I would definitely recommend that he playtest it for a couple of hours with a few games before purchase. If it freezes then steer well clear, and don't buy it without the original receipt.
