Happy Music?

So the majority of my music seems to be...emo and it is getting a little depressing to hear only that all the time. Anyone have any suggestions on bands with less depressing lyrics, nothing too crazy though. Anything from indie rock to progressive metal is fine by me.

Pavement is, at the very least, not sad generally

    Also, the Pixies

Pretty much required listening, both of them.

:^: to all these recommendations. I'm going through my Jonathan Coulton collection as I type this, and TMBG are one of my long-time favorites.

I'm gonna throw Queen out here--they have a fair number of upbeat songs throughout their discography. If I had to recommend one album along those lines, I'd say Jazz is a good choice.

Also, check out Electric Six--they rock pretty hard and don't take themselves very seriously.

    +1 to..

Bishop Allen (Especially the album The Broken String)
    Cansei de Ser Sexy
Regina Spektor (Not all of her music though..)
    Jimmy Eat World

    Some suggestions from me..

    The Submarines
    The Russian Futurists
    Albert Hammond Jr.
    Vampire Weekend
    Mystery Jets
    The Aquabats!
    Tullycraft
    Los Campesinos!

I really need to make a 'happy' playlist for myself out of some favourite songs.

For someone wanting to get into ELO and Electric Six, where should I start?

If you can listen to an entire album of the Polyphonic Spree or Cloud Cult and not end up smiling then you need to bury yourself because you are dead.

    also, +1 to:
    aquabats
Johnathon Coulton (seriously, go to his site right now and listen to Re: Your Brains)
    They Might Be Giants

    Thanks Limp.

I've never listened to a Cloud Cult album but I do have ~ 2 songs on my PC and they're awesome. Also, if you're looking to find a nice mix of music much of which could be listened to as 'happy' music there is a guy who puts out a monthly playlist of Indie/Rock which is full of awesomeness (On my Zune out of most months at least three quarters have been marked with the heart which indicates I like it) -- it's not completely legal though unless of course you simply read the list.

    I'll also add more..

The Hives (Okay, it's a different type of happy)
    The Hoosiers
    The Zutons

I find lots of pop-punk to be extremely happy sounding, even when the subject matter is not. Blink-182 and New Found Glory will pretty much always sound like happy time music to me.

Also, whoever said Big Casino is correct. The first time I heard that song, I felt like I had already heard it before, and had been listening to it my entire youth, in a good way.

They have a DVD of their performance at Austin City Limits several years ago and it is amazing. It was during their colored robe phase. They put on such a great show.

Bobby McFerrin baby. Though I'm not sure I spelled it right.
I like to listen to Ozma. A lot of their lyrics are kind of sad, but their music makes me happy...

    That's The Diskettes. Absurdly happy.

    I'd also suggest:

    Beulah
    Minus the Bear
    Of Montreal
Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin

Certain Ben Folds songs are happy, but be careful, some of his stuff is depressing, too. Go for Steven's Last Night in Town, Army, Philosophy, and Kate.

    Boy Least Likely To
More recent Bellle & Sebastian (Dear Catastrope Waitress or The Life Pursuit)

I guess that last one makes me lose my precious indie-cred, though.

The title track always makes me smile for some reason. I think it's the backing vocals of "Eeeeeviiilllll rooooobots".

"Kate" never fails to put me in a good mood. Also "Underground", "Jackson Cannery", and "Hiro's Song", though the last is ben solo and difficult as hell to find.

+1 to OK Go. Especially the videos for "Million Ways" and "Here It Goes Again"

Cat Empire - Ska infulenced happy music from AU. Can't beat it.

+1 to CSS, Architecture in Helsinki, The Submarines, Boy Least Likely To....(How can you not love band with an album called The Best Party Ever?)

+1/2 to The Flaming Lips: Yoshimi is generally upbeat, but they can be mellow, and even sad, at times.

    I'd recommend:

The Concretes. Swedish pop music. Doesn't really get better than that.

Feist. The Reminder, not Let It Die, which is a lot slower.

The Go! Team. If not always strictly happy, they're bursting with energy.

Mates of State. Happy good times music, for sure.

The Pipettes. Like The Supremes, only happier and British.

Shonen Knife. I can't help buy smile when I hear them. They may be somewhat of an acquired taste, but if you can appreciate fun, punk, and songs about absolutely nothing (and everything) then you may fall in love.

    That ought to do.
