The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
My final opinion will have to wait until I see how it is implemented. If it feels more like earning something special, rather than being given a list of things to do, then I might prefer it. I don't know why, but the fact that there's a list and percentage of completed achievements on the 360 takes some of the fun away from it for me... Makes them less special and more like chores for me.
That brings up an interesting point. Both Warhawk and MGS4 have sorta achievements already. If patched, would they just go by those, or add new ones?
And if they used old ones, would you have to redo them?
As long as they don't attach a score to them like MS does, I'm fine. With 360, at times I felt I was more compelled to drive up my Gamerscore rather than playing games simply for the fun of it. So while I think Achievements are great and a nice diversion, Gamerscore is terrible.
remember, trophies were always due to be integrated with home, so it wouldn't surprise me to see quite a few games with some dormant trophy functionality
can't wait to see how trophies work out with little big planet

I keep hearing complaints like this about game related stuff, and I don't get it. If there is some ignorable feature that has the potential to lessen your enjoment, why not ignore it?
It looks pretty interesting. I think the big questions are going to be around things like: how many trophies are allowed in each game, is there any enforcement behind making sure platinum trophies are actually hard (or conversely, bronze trophies are easy), does anything actually happen if you have X number of trophies, how easy will it be to view/share your trophies (in game, out of game, on the web, etc.), etc. Essentially the same type of questions around Achievements and Gamerscore, only applied to the PlayStation model.

I honestly can't explain it. It just became really hard to ignore, and I think the reasons are A) because there's an overall number attached through all your games and you get absolutely nothing for Gamerscore. I knew it was bad when I bought Condemned, didn't enjoy it, but kept playing anyways. I was not enjoying video games anymore because of it, and I think it was just killing my general opinion of the medium.
Then I got a PS3, and pick up Uncharted, and hey, there's Achievements. But seeing as they didn't add up into a cumulative score based on all my games and (gasp) they actually give you rewards for your achievements, I had a lot more fun with it. Similar experiences have since been had with R&C and MGS4.
While the trophies will be cumulative, I think their approach of "one goal, one trophy" is a bit better. I just hope they don't muck it up with so many multiplayer achievements like Xbox did.

Children make poor critics. Also I wasn't really trying.
Anyway, like I said, tiered achievements sound cool. It is much more clear what the big stuff is, and would probably better model how I play my games. I wonder how much granularity they will have, though? How many "Bronze" trophies per game, and so on?

Do you have any idea how hard it is to really, truly, ignore something and put it out of your mind?
I seriously doubt you've ever truly tried to ignore something that is being waved in your face every ten seconds. It's more likely that you've avoided the situation entirely and never had to test it. In this case, that would be turning off the console.

The tiered approach ... I can't help but think this might be just as addictive as achievement points ... maybe even more so as the "har3c0R3" go for platinum trophies.

I don\'t find MS gamerpoints waved in my face at all. With some games I have fun going after the achievements, but in most cases I don\'t really care. It shouldn\'t be difficult to ignore.
What a huge waste of effort to put that crap in. Who the fuck cares about "achievements" in a video game? There's at least five things I'd love to see before that, not the least of which is more PSN games.

Sometimes they are just a fun diversion to get you to do something that is possible in the game but you didn't really think about. I admit that some goals are stupid, like find all of x item, but if done right they can be fun.
Basically my answer is diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

They're still going to be the same developers making the games that put the multiplayer achievements in their games on the 360. I doubt you'll see much difference in how and where they implement them in between the two systems.
I'd like to be able to play my own music during games before any kinda Trophy system. (and no, I don't want to use my iPod)
That's suppose to come with 2.4 update too.
I wish they would find a way to mix the channels though, so playing your custom soundtrack doesn't drown out the entire game. Hence why I rarely use it on the 360.

You can. Playing music on 360 only stops the game's music from playing. If your custom music is too loud press your guide button and adjust the music volume with the slider at the bottom of the blade.

You do know there is an option for turning off those achievement pop-ups, don't you?

Can you turn off the gamerscore on your tag too? I don't have a 360.
If so, then yeah sure. Turn it off and stop whining about it.
I thought the problem was that people couldn't.

It really should be a non-issue, as it's so small, but Sunday I was contemplating getting Lego Indiana Jones, and I couldn't decide to get it for the xbox or the ps3. The swing factor for me ended up being achievements in the 360 version. In the end I decided to get MGS4 instead, but the point remains, achievements are fun and can influence whether or not I get a game for my ps3, or my xbox360.

Actually it depends on the game. In Halo, for example, you'll get no dialogue either.

I'm sure the Big Boss Emblem in MGS4 would be a Platinum.
I'm really hoping that they patch older games with Trophies. Specially MGS4.
I want me some Warhawk Trophies.
And if they used old ones, would you have to redo them?
I get the feeling that certain companies were in the know.

As for the PS3 getting a similar feature - meh.
EoJ Trophy: "Kill Yourself" - You used a Zealot deck in Ranked during v2.00
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
I'm actually excited about this, especially if each trophy looks different and you can display them how you want in your little not-second life house.

I have been in the home beta for months and my beach house is crying out for something to fill the shelves.
The U.S Blog has a walk through of the Trophy system, pretty much what we all expected.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/
First games to support it are:
* BUZZ! Quiz TV
* LittleBigPlanet
* MotorStorm Pacific Rift
* NBA 09 - PS3
* PAIN
* PixelJunk Eden
* Resistance 2
* SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
* Warhawk
He did say games could be patched.
