The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
It sounds a little bit like Monopoly, but with farms, as the game's primary object is to raise your net worth by building farms and planting crops on the board, collecting tolls from players who land there, and battling for control of the amber waves of grain with other farmers through slot machine minigames. There also looks to be a supernatural element to it too, though, with spirits and creatures afoot.
The cards, featuring items and seeds and stuff like that, are used to plant crops or add stat boosts during combat. You build your deck up by completing maps. The cool bit is that there's also a story behind the gameplay, with its own single-player mode, featuring the siblings William and Ruby and some strange dreams they start having when their mother falls ill. Dreams about cornfields, maybe?
Here is a bit from the game site:
Features
Basic Play
Farmlands is a board and collectible card game. You move around a board building farms and planting crops to increase the value of your farms. If your opponent lands on your farm they must pay you a toll. The interesting thing about planting farms is if you connect two farms they are worth the same value. The goal of the game is to reach a certain total value of all your assets or to have the highest total value when the turn timer runs out.
Battle System
If your crops are next to an opponents space you can engage in combat. Combat is resolved by a slot machine system. Each of you will play the slot machine and based on the number of combos you get it will do damage to the opponents creature.
Story: Single Player & Cooperative Campaign
Play through the story by yourself or with a friend. You will earn items “cards” as you play through the game which you can use to customize your deck.
Multiplayer
Play with up to 4 friends Hotseat or networked. Teams 1v1, 2v2, 3v1, 1v2 or free for all.
Seeds and Items (aka Cards)
You start with an initial pack of items and seeds. Seeds are used to plant crops or boost your attack in combat. Items are used to modify the behavior of things in the game. For instance there could be a slowmo item to slow down your slots when you are in combat, a locust storm for unleashing locusts to destroy crops, a dice manipulator to change the roll of a target player for a turn, and many more.
Pack Building (aka Deck)
When you play the game you will draw items from your pack to use on your turn. At the end of a level in single or multiplayer you will receive more items which you can use to customize your pack.
Any of the Culdcept fans out there what do you guys think?
Yeah it seems very samey but the combat is based off of slot machines. Perhaps unlike Culdcept you won't play a match for an hour and a half and then lose and get two lousy cards.
Yeah that is very annoying especially in single player when you have to replay the same board and the two cards don't help you so you have to use the same cards and hope for a better outcome.
In regards to the topic of how samey this game is, I'd say that I'll stick with my Culdcept, thanks. I'm a fan of Harvest Moon, but I don't think I'd give a rip about a farming tcg/boardgame. Plus it's going to be on PC, taking out the group activity element of the game.
