So some 18 being the magic number, is when society suddenly decides you should know better? Most people past 30 can't or won't stop acting like 12 year olds.

Yes. Precisely. Because the alternative would be testing everyone to see if they were mature enough to deal with sexuality. 18 is when you are old enough to vote, it is when you considered a legal adult. If you can think of a better way to judge when someone is old enough to deal with adult things, then I'm sure we'd like to hear it.

So, we'll assume we're talking about the states, but wait, other countries let people drink alcohol before being 21, does that make those cultures disgusting?

I never used the word "disgusting." I said, "Mental illness." And I said "vote", not "drink."

Let me approach it this way:

Accidental statutory rape charge: "I swear, she said she was 18!"

Pedophile: "I am exclusively attracted to people who have not entered puberty."

Do you see the difference? One is a natural extension of normal sexual behavior (attraction to adults) and one is a compulsive desire to have sex with non-adults (the latter.) Where each society draws that line is up to them.

Unless we're talking about extremely young children, in which case ethical issues can get muddled. But most societies will say, "Only adults are capable of making sexual choices." It is how they define "adult" that is muddled, and it is having a compulsive attraction to non-adults that is the illness.

But either of those would be a nasty stain on anyones file. Even if it was "accidental". I'm not saying pedophilia is right or anything, I'm just saying it happens. It's like how children can grow adverse fetishes from being mistreated, so a molested kid grows up into a pedophile, or someone that was raped grows a rape fetish.

I don't think there is any question of statutory rape here, though. We're talking about catching pedophiles. I don't particularly agree with the way statutory rape perpetrators are lumped in with rapists and perverts either, but that's neither here nor there.

We're talking about extreme examples of pedophilia and sexual predation. We know it happens. Is it right to humiliate the perpetrators?

We don't humiliate other criminals, why is it exclusive to one group? I know I answered your question with a questions but really that's all I could think of, why is it exclusive to one group?

Yes violence against children is bad, but is it worth making men to fear playing with their own children?
This is probably overly auto-biographical, but there have been issues with abuse in my family towards the women (grandfather, greatgrandfather, great uncles... no one still alive) on my mom's side (and apparently my sister was victimized as well). As a result, neither I nor my father are really allowed by my mom or sister to be with my niece or nephew alone. Not that we'd ever want to be, but we get "looks" from them if for some reason we were in a room alone with them (for example, my niece likes to watch cartoons and such in the room I stay in when I visit my parents and she likes to have me explain my old books to her), we get looks of suspicion. I sure as hell never let the door close.

I understand it. But it sucks to be considered, by default, to be a pedophile and a rapist by my own family when I've never raised a hand against a woman or child, much less tried to violate another human.

I think that's seriously fucked up and would honestly have a hard time living in that household. If people in your family have that little trust for one another i really fail to see how its a functional family at all.

the society decides what is best for its own survival.
Hah, if only this were even remotely true.

Ok, I stopped reading this thread about halfway through and visited the perverted justice site.

Oh my shit, I don't blame people for wanting these fuckers to be caught before they ever pull this shit the first time.

One guy trying to coax a 13 year old to be his sex slave.

No flirting on *her* part, no *bored* comments, just...uegh. The guy taking full advantage of what he percieved to be a weak, lonely girl.

This guy wasn't sick in the head...he was EVIL.

On behalf of EVIL people everywhere, we would prefer you not compare us to pedophiles. Sure, we are evil, but man even we have standards.
