I don't often post but when I heard possibly my favorite (though obscure stateside) band in the recording Gabe put up today I couldn't help but bask in the greatness of Great Big Sea and spread the word. For those new to GBS they are a are somewhere between celtic folk and modern alternative usually wavering between extremes depending on which song you are listening to at the time.
I discovered them through a friend many years ago and have been spreading the word ever since. The majority of listeners on my campus have heard from me and that group has grown from modest to many in a short period.
The reason this music is so infectious, as you will find if you take interest, is multi-faceted:
1) The songs are have an old-world folk feel that is very endearing
2) The songs have a very merry beat in all instances
3) The lyrics enhance this merry feeling by being polar opposites to the beat,
that is, the songs are only about a select category of things: sex, romance,
drinking, and death
4) The lyrics are easily heard, and fun to sing along to, my favorite in this respect
is "River Driver"
5) Alcohol improves this music heavily and it is ideally played with friends and
liquor present. For drunken vocal projection I still recommend "River Driver"
6) See number 5
So if you have time please check them out. Some friends and I are hoping to see them live in Newfoundland one day in hopes of popping off to the bar afterward with the crowd or the artists and would love to see more people there. Also if you have similar music to recommend, please advise.

I mean, I'm a Great Big Sea fan myself, and had moderately high hopes when I saw there was a new thread about them, especially with the new album out.
But this thread really does suck. If I didn't already have a massive gay crush on 2/3rds of the band, your OP wouldn't have done anything to make me want to listen to them.
This dude's crappy thread aside, GBS is very much the shit, and you owe it to yourself to see them live if they're ever in your town.
