100 pages of fallout goodness, needs new home!

edited August 2008 in Games and Technology
Time to come out those vaults kiddies, I figured since the old thread's way back there, and was nearing the 100 page mark anyway, I'd make a newer, up to date and dedicated to the series in its entirety since the other thread was 90% old fallout talk and the other 10% was inklings of new info on 3.

What's a Fallout you say? Well it's only the rootinist tootinist gosh darn greatest RPG series ever made.

What would happen if the cold war turned hot, and the future of the 50s were what really happened? That's fallout, just add a ton of dark humor and sex.

The first fallout, as wiki tells us, is a computer role-playing game produced by Tim Cain, developed by Black Isle Studios (though before the studio was named "Black Isle") and published by Interplay in 1997.

It follows the story of a guy named Ephram, Ephram weren't his real name of course, his real name was Jim. Real name was Jim, but we called him Ephram, isn't that crazy? Ol' Ephram was pretty stupid, so we got tired of his ass bumblin about, and sent him to fix our water since that's about all he was good fer. So we send ol' Ephram out into the waste to get a water chip to fix our perpetual water machine. That crazy ol' Ephram wondered the waste fer dern near 2 years 'fore he ever did fin'it.

Not a'fir he done went and got all kinds of strange outside diseases, includin crabs, radiation poisonin, stupiditis and a mean sunburn. Well we thank'd 'im and kicked his ol arse out cause frankly we were tired of his stupid and his smell.

Now he wondered about and somehow started his own village. This starts fallout 2 a couple of generations into the village. Wiki tells us- Fallout 2 is a critically-acclaimed computer role-playing game published by Interplay in 1998. The second game takes place in 2241, 80 years after the first Fallout.

So we got his ancestors, and they're tired o bein all smelly n dirty in the waste. The pick a direct descendant of ole Ephram fer journeyin out fer a GECK, which is a fancy lunch box with the power t'make cities or some such nonsense. This guy's name's Pooter, cause like ole Ephram he's about as dumb an' all he does is poot. Stupidity can only be tolerated fer so long it seems, since ole Pooter was sent on this journey a'fer takin some silly ass test is a dirty ole temple.

Ole Pooter weren't too smart, so he bumbled about the waste lookin around fer this GECK thing, and met a buncha people an people like thangs a'fore even knowin where he was goin. Eventually he fins the ol' vault but a buncha nasty critters is livin in it. He eventually gets em to hand over the GECK.

Now, afore he could get back to his tribe, he done ran into trouble. This ole soldiers livin on an oil rig done stole his tribe. Now, ol' Pooter weren't too smart, but he didn't take too kindly to his kin folk bein stolen, so he managed to get out there and cause all kinds of trouble afore rescuein his tribe.

Now, Fallout 3 NOTHING to do with this as it's set in the future! On the other side of the US no less!

Once again our pal Wiki tells us- Fallout 3 is an action role-playing game, currently under development by Bethesda Softworks. It will be the third major game in the Fallout series, which has also spawned the spin-offs Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. It will take place in the year 2277, 36 years after the setting of Fallout 2.

Shock! Story on the main page!

"Vault 101 – Jewel of the Wastes. For 200 years, Vault 101 has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you’ve ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth."

So, any bitchin collectors stuff coming? You bet!

The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. edition comes with the following, though the bobble head has been changed, and also pre-orders from Gamestop include a soundtrack disc and cover art poster, which will be shown below as well.

Also, if you don't want to throw your money at gamestop, walmart.com has the SE and normal edition listed.

New bobblehead modle, less likely to break is the reasoning for changing it.

The PC version will be $49.99 the PC while the 360 and PS3 version will be $59.99 and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. edition will be an extra $20, but wait, Amazon.com has another edition that comes with a big ole clock lookin like a pip boy. Which you can find here though I do need a new clock I don't think it's worth it.

So, waiting til Fall until it's out, I might even buy it twice if I have a comp to run it as I've pre-ordered the 360 CE.

That is a pretty sweet clock, but $120 is a tad pricey for that edition.

I'm just curious, have they released the specs for this yet? Because it doesn't look like I'll be able to play it on my aging 7600GS, and if I have to upgrade I'd rather just buy a 360, except oh hey wait I don't own a television.

Nope. I believe that's the official site, so that would be appropriate.

There's even the making of the Pip-3000 clock on there.

I'd imagine that as long as they're tied down to the current gen consoles, especially with the 360 as the lead platform, that the requirements will be that different from oblivions

These forums are killing me. Between Thief and Fallout alone I'm completely screwed, and these threads just make me want to play them more. I haven't even beaten Fallout 1, and I still want to do FO2 with a dozen different types of characters. I don't even CARE about Fallout 3 because I still have years in the first two. Jesus christ, Black Isle.

I've played through with a stupid character for 2, and I didn't like it that much, the novelty wore off after not being able to do most of the quest.

My smart scientist woman is pretty cool, I had to rely on party guest to help for awhile.

Poor Vic, Marcus turned him into confetti, Sulik got killed by raiders, That deathclaw Vorris? he got caught in a shoot out in a bar, and Marcus was eaten by wild death claws :(. Looking for the dogs now, got the cyber-dog need the others, they're all random encounters right?

Fallout 2 was my favorite. The whole time limit on Fallout 1 turned me away. I know I can find that damn water chip almost right off the bat, but I didn't know that when I first played. So many game overs from running out of time. :(

Fallout 3 is looking fantastic so far. I have high hopes for it.

I think so. You're going to have to find a text file with the manual though. The game has you refer to numbered passages during play to describe scenes and give clues/answers.

That and I'm old. So old...

    No idea.

I originally played it on the Commodore 64 and then later in an issue of Computer Gaming World there was a CDROM included that had Wasteland, Might & Magic 1, Ultima IV, Wizardy 5, and something else on it. What a great issue that was. Nostalgia...

Wasteland is next on my backlog in the retro column. (Working on Syndicate right now.) I remember it being pretty fun to hack through, though I only finished about half the game and need to complete it.

I can't remember how I got it to run, but it works great for me on XP. I'll look into it tonight, PM me if I forget.

I liked it at the time because I love post-apocalypse stuff and turn-based squad combat and I don't mind slogging through stuff, but looking back on it, I'm not sure if I'd ever want to play it again. I'd rather just run through Silent Storm or JA2.

I seem to remember the first half being a little more interesting and fun, before the robots and crap start showing up.

The singleplayer is OK, but not really as good as JA2 or Silent Storm. The missions were more like tactical puzzles than approaching the situations as you want to (as in JA2 and Silent Storm). Later in the game, the enemies shift somewhat, requiring more heavy duty firepower from energy weapons and, from what I understand (I never managed to play beyond the Reavers), making Small Guns skill largely obsolete.

It was still a fun game, but and the real-time dynamic was definitely an interesting take on things that felt as if it worked for the style of gameplay they were going for. It's just that I didn't find it as fun singleplayer as a more 'open' tactical game like JA2.

Where Tactics holds a major trump card over the other two though, is that it has multiplayer. If you've ever wanted to select and customise a squad of units and pit them against a friend in JA2, this game is pretty much the answer. Whatever the limitations of the singleplayer campaign may have been, they naturally don't have to make an appearance in your multiplayer game.

Of course, this all depends on you knowing someone else that you want to play with.

What, no love for Brotherhood of Steel yet? I bought this game for $5 and it was totally worth the money. It's like a not as good Dark Alliance with cursing and a playable ghoul character. You can unlock the character from Fallout 1 as an old dude to play as if I remember correctly.

People saying its bad has nothing to do with being "purists". The AI is non functional and makes the game get tiring, as you just do the same thing over and over again. Compared to Jagged Alliance, Silent Storm, etc, its just plain mediocre.

I personally love the multiplayer option, though, even if its unbalanced.
