The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
For those who can remember this ugly duckling of the MMO world you might be interested to know that its just had an allover facial, tummy tuck, nose trim, manicure, pedicure, wardrobe rebuild, fitness regime, and from the looks of it about a 3 month marinade with some of that really expensive mud that's supposed to contain essence of philosophers stone but your sure is just mud.

From going in and having a run around I can tell you that the content is basically the same as it was about 2 months ago however much as a change is as good as a rest it does feel like a new game (especially now its Full Screen! which is some sort of technical revolution that non of the other people in the worlds I went to would shut up about)
So many of this game's players abandoned it forever when they abolished player-killing. Looking at the FAQ, it looks like you could call this "RuneScape 3" just like the upgrade from Classic in 2004.
Yeah the title is an obscure reference and a half.
There was an article about these guys in Edge last month IIRC. It might be on the website now that this month's is out. Looked pretty slick considering it's all in Java, but I've never been one for MMOs.
I remember a few years ago a friend and I created characters for a laugh (never played an MMO before) and ended up playing right through the night and into the next day... continued like that for part of the week and then became suddenly completely burned out and never played again.
But for a brief period of time, it was clearly the BEST game we'd ever played in our crazy little lives!

My Google-Fu seems weak today and you people seem knowledgeable. Is there a monthly fee for this game?
It's "free" in the sense that you get to play about 20% of the content and get to play with all the annoying, immature dicks. You have to pay a monthly fee for more.
I should check this out when i get home, played a lot of this game back in the day. The game is grindy as hell, the community is one of the worst I've ever seen and combat is down right boring but it had the best quests I've ever seen in any MMO ever (infact it's better than a fair few single player games also). Between that and everything being player crafted (thus creating a live and active marketplace) I played for a good few years.
I gave the first runescape a shot, was turned off by the horrid graphics and the grindfest. Nice to see they've updated the looks to 10 years ago though; it could give Unreal a run for it's money.

That chart is fascinating, but I can't help wishing there were some solid numbers on it, or at least a rough estimate of the number of people currently playing MMORPGs.

According to one of their other charts, Runescape appears to be sitting right around 1.25 million subs.

Hey now, those are some damn nice looking graphics for a browser based game.
Whoa shit WoW is a beast. Aren't they had like 10 mil subs or something, I thought I saw that on there banner on the Blizzard page while I was checking out D3. Still that's a pretty hefty income they have...
The thing I hate about sub comparisons is that everybody claims they've got a shitload of accounts on their games, and then you find out that ~95% of those are from people who played for 5 minutes and then uninstalled or put their account on hiaetus. Someone should figure out a way to check the average number of accounts that log on at least once a week or month or so and work off that.
Anyway, I never could understand why people are so infatuated with this game. The writing is awful, the control is awful, the gameplay in general is awful, and why use such a limiting medium like java to program the game instand of a stand-along executable they can tweak to their heart's content?
(Forgive me if I sound snide or something, but I absolutly loathe Runescape and the kind of mentalities it fosters).
It was done in java because it was made by a company who did small java based browser games. They made a small browser based java game that had multiplayer and it just got bigger and bigger. I think a lot of the appeal of the game is you can play it just about anywhere (eg school/library/work), if they made it a stand alone executable they would likely lose a lot of this.

I was thinking the same thing
Brit fashion guru and hosts the TV show "what not to wear", not sure who the US equivalent would be.

Shut up.

Don't worry. No one is thinking that you probably love dudes more than chicks.

I was like that.
Only that I stopped at Lvl 81.
Ah... to be young again...
I guess when I get back home Smash Bros will be getting a break
EDIT: man I'm making a lot of typos

Forgotten Tale of a drunken dwarf
Yes
The only reason I could be arsed with the game at all is because of the quests.
Good to see it's still going strong *login*
High Detail is still in beta, so if you're not a member, you won't be rocking any fancier graphics yet.
I used to watch that show just to ogle Stacy London. I also at one point dated a girl who looked almost exactly like her.
Otherwise, it wouldn't be in second place behind WoW in total market share:
